well, the connection on the left seems to be an old MAC serial connection, maybe a printer or appletalk network? maybe the person had an old MAC in the car, sorta like a in car MIDI player

The grey foam is a dead giveaway of factory plugs.
Those are the cables for what I think is a factory CD stacker! If you look at the picture of the back of the head unit on page 50-101 of the 88 FSM wiring diagrams it shows those plugs quite clearly, labled "from compact disc hideaway".
I didn't even know these cars came with stackers, can someone else shed some light?

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
I have those in my 87 t2 as well. They came with the premium stereo system that included the cd/tape deck adn pioneer amplifer in the rear and crossover in front, and door speakers in the doors. Those fed signal to the rear amp, as well as power. IIRC, there ar 3 of them in my car, 1 red and 2 black. Look by the spare tire in the back for the big pioneer amp, and by the driver side dashspeaker/hoodlatch for the crossover.

Thanks for clearing that up Kevin. I also found a similar black plug where the back of the radio would be. Ive got the speakers in my doors, and a few people have pointed out that they dont have those. The speaker I removed from under the glove box also says pioneer. It all makes sense now.

looks like a 1st gen cd-changer cables (1st gen meaning the old really big complex systems) I used to work for a company that installed them systems. The foam on the plug ends can be aftermarket also some of the older cdchangers had that for some reason.. in order to find out for sure, look around the back you should see similar ends loose
