I was messing with my spare engine and I figured I take some pics for educational purposes.

As many people know, if you remove the main pulley, there are bearings that come unseated. Well this is how everything behind the front cover fits together. With the pulley, CAS drive gear, oil pump drive gear, and counter weight, the bearing can't move. (bearing not visible in this pic.

This next picture shows the pulley removed. Now there is a lot of room for the other parts on the shaft to move forward.


The bearing sits on bushing. There are different sized bushings but thats another story for another day. But the size of the bushing is what dictates how much room the bearing can move forward before it falls off. We are talking thousanth of an inch. Here is a close up of the bearing. The part between the bearing and the shaft is the bushing.


This is what it looks like when the bearing falls off. The bearing should be flat against the wall.

The engine builders did not properly install the front cover o-ring, nor did they set the eccentric end play properly...

 

wait the main pulley? i had to take it off to do my waterpump. now im worried. should i be worried?

 

Taking off the main pully is no big deal. Taking off the HUB that it mounts to is the dangerous bit.

 

been there, so use lot of greas or build the motor in the uprite
