What exactly is flooding?

My friend says flooding is when too much fuel gets into the carborator. This explains why he thinks its impossible for my car to flood ('87 TII). So he told me to find out what exactly is flooding, and since I'm a dumbass, I don't know! I have a feeling its gas leaking into my combustion chamber but like I said, I don't really know. So any help on how my non-carborated car could flood would be great, thanks!

v. flood·ed, flood·ing, floods
v. tr.
To cover or submerge with or as if with a flood; inundate: My desk is flooded with paper.
To fill with an abundance or an excess: flood the market with cheap goods.

It is what it sounds like. The engine becomes flooded with fuel and the spark plugs no longer have the ablity to light the fuel to start combustion. Anything from a 2cycle motor cycle to a V10 Viper can be flooded. Fuel injection help prevent flooding in a major way but its not perfect.

I'm not sure if this is correct or not but. I was once told that gas isn't nearly as flamable in its liquid form as in its gas form.

Leaking injectors is a myth. I know i've read on here from the "major" guys that an injector has never leaked on them. 7's flood during their warm up cycles due to errors in the computer.

I'm not an expert but here's my definition. Flooding is when the amount of gas enters the chamber that it is no longer a mist or vapor but more of a liquid. The liquid without sufficient O2 cannot ignite. This is a huge problem for 2nd gen. RX7’s due to vapor lock. If the car is flooded ***STOP***. Do not try to just start the car over and over, it usually won’t work. There are 2 ways to fix this. If it’s not too badly flooded, go under the hood and pull the EGI fuse. Get back in the car and with the gas floored, crank it for 30-60 seconds. ***car will not start at this time***. Replace fuse and without touching gas, crank ignition. Car should start right up. If this method doesn’t work, pull spark plugs (leading and trailing, 4 all together), with a turkey baster (their cheap and works best for me) squirt in some Automatic Transmission fluid into the plug holes. Theory is the oil seals the rotor with the housing. Again, with fuse out, Crank car with gas floored. Replace NEW plugs and EGI fuse. Crank again without touching gas. Should start up and Blue smoke will burn out.

Cool MadCat BeefHole, looking forward to the Mechwarrior movie next summer!
