i have an 87 na and i use 87 because with a na motor if u use too much of octane and you dont have the air to back it up it will burn less efficantly and will slow your car down

NA cars can use the lowest octane you can find, Turbo cars must run 93 or better to prevent detonation from what I have gathered on here.

In a perfect world, an NA would use something like 80. To look at turbos, stock, 87-89. Highly modified ..110.

you wanna use 87 or whatever cheap for NA motors. If you have hi compression, boost, or use nitrous you wanna use some higher octane **** depend on how much or each. I.e. higher ocmpression higher octane, higgher boost etc, needs even higher octane

85 Octane is the only stuff I ever put in my car. BTW, higher octane fuel has lower energy content (less mpg), less volatile (harder starts in very cold weather) and can create engine deposits in engines not designed to run on high octane fuel. A non turbo rotary is not designed to run on high octane fuel and using it is a waste of money.

my 86 NA runs fine on on 87 octane. But when i put 91, it feels faster. for example i have a hard time peeling out in 3rd gear on 87, but when i run 91 or higher peels in 3rd a lot easier. same is true if i run 112 octane. it feels faster, and it burns the tires a hell of a lot easier.

should it not? i have a mainly stock 86 gxl

It's probably in your head.
Octane Ratings are just a "resistance to knock", or detonate. Once your intake is sealed, you begin to build pressure. If too much pressure builds up before your spark plug fires, the fuel mixture will ignite on it's own, due to pressure, heat, and possibly glowing hot carbon deposits. This is detonation.
There is nothing added to gas to make an Octane rating, it is mearly a property of gas.

But if it makes you feel faster, by all means, have fun.

87, I've heard that if you run higher in an n/a that it causes your exhaust to overheat faster.

there is no work done to your car??? that is odd that it will run better on high octane...did you run your car on the track with 112 verse 87 and see times differnce between the two and it ran better with high octane??

Stop talking like this "Octane" is an object you can touch or feel. It is a rating, nothing else. You cannot butter your toast with octane. You cannot drink octane.

..."The measurement of gasoline octane quality most often used is the Antiknock Index (AKI). It is an average of the two ways that octane can be measured; the research octane number (RON) and the motor octane number (MON). Both the RON and MON measure the same things but do it at different speeds, temperatures, and spark advances."..."The antiknock index is stated as (R+M)/2. This is the number required by law to be listed on the octane decal on the gasoline pump."...

I use 89 in my TII (halteched) for long trips and I can squeeze about 28 MPG out of it... For running around down and stopmping a mudhole in the local ricers, I put sunoco 94 in it.. and average about 15 MPG!!!!!!!!!!!

the lower octane you use, the easier it is for the fuel to burn, hence, better gas mileage...

Someone posted 80 would be ideal for a N/A.... that probably a high number!!!!!!!!

Boost is the culprit... adding pressure increases the temperature rise of the fuel air charge during compression and thus the probability of detonation... 12.7 A/F is normall accepted as the best power making ratio... you MIGHT be able to run 12.7 if you're running turbo blue race gas and get away with it... but.. i wouldn't try it!!!!!!

That didn't make any sense...
First you claim: "...with out[sic] any junk in it."
And then you say it smells like "...that same candy smell..."?
If it smells funny, SOMETHING was added???

I used to use 93 for my NA because I felt it makes rev up smooth (especially at low rev) than 87. Later I felt it might develop more carbon than 87. So I decided go 87 (because I don't want to clean 5/6 ports stuff again) and am enough getting used to it now.

just for the sake of argument, i thought you can drink and touch octane (if it is in liquid form, i don't know for sure what form it takes and at what conditions). its just a chain of 8 carbons with single bonded hydrogen atoms, if i remember my chemistry correctly.

I used to run 93 at 11PSI.
When it went over $3/gal, I retarded the spark, dialed the boost back to 10, & switched to 87.
