i use 93 in my 88 n/a. i get good power and it does feel smoother on all gears than putting 87 or 89. i still need to lean the a/f mixture though but i do get about 17-19 mpg city.

In high elevation states. I live at 6800 feet above sea level. Typical rule of thing I have read about is you can reduce octane by 1 pt for every 1,000 foot gain in altitude. This rule of course only applies to normally aspirated unmodded engines.

^ same...87 TII running 87 octane...it told me in the manual that it was designed to use 87...that was enough proof for me that its ok to use 87.

That only works if its stock, though.

should it not? i have a mainly stock 86 gxl

The only way I can figure out this one is that your car's timing is advanced of the stock setting. But if that were the case, then you'd be detonating on 87 octane.

Consequently, I have to call baloney on your statement.

Another quick comment, its amazing how many people have accelerometers and dynamometers in stalled in their asses. The only valid way to test a power improving theory is to put it on a dyno and take a reading or take to to a 1/4 mile track.

There was another poster in another thread who stated he felt a 1 HP increase by doing something different with his car. I almost died of laughter.

I've been using 93, but recently put in 89 and it hasn't exploded, so I think I'll stick with 89.

I've never put anything less than 91 in my Turbo II. I would like a higher octane level, but it's the highest I can find around here. I've heard rumors of 94 somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.

98 in my '86 TII. That's the highest pump fuel available in Australia. We don't have 87 octane, the lowest is 91 I think.
