What Does The Air Pump Do?
It blows air in one ear that in turn spins a lil wheel that generates electricity that your brain needs to creat thoughts that your fingers need to use to type in the word "SEARCH"

Looking from the front of the car, the air pump is located to the left of the water pump, just follow the belts and you can't miss it, it's about the size of an alternator. It's there to add air to various emission control devices to ensure a complete burn of all the fuel (some doesn't get burnt in the engine causing high emissions). On the 89-91 NA engines it also actuates the auxilliary ports and VDI (which won't work without it). Unless emissions is a concern where you live, remove it along with the air control valve (ACV) and cat converter. You'll gain a few hp and a tidier engine bay. The ACV can sometimes be a culprit in poorly running engines. Do a seach of this forum, you'll find tons of info on how to do this easy mod.

Thanks, I need that info too. My question is: what are the realistic consequences to losing control of the 6 ports. Is the trade off for high end power really worth the loss of low end torque for a street car? I am about to install Rotary Performance's underdrive and alternator pullies and I already have the Bonez race pipe, which way should I go?

rx7gtu -One thing to note:
I just read another post from RETed about your pulleys. You do NOT want to run the main underdrive pulley along with the alternator pulley - it's not enough to RPM to charge the system in the FC's.
The 6 ports not working (closed) will cost you quite a bit of top end power.
Wiring them open is debateable. Some like it, some don't. Personally, I like the feeling of the car pulling while in low rpm's since torque is a bit lacking on the low end on a rotary anyway.
My recommendation: If your 6 ports work, leave 'em alone. Otherwise decide to either fix them or remove them and do something along the lines of Pineapple Racing's 6 port sleeves.

Thanks There is too much info to make a clear decision for my purposes. I've got the pullies, but now after reading the other thread, I'm not too sure what to do. I would like to get rid of the air pump, but then I would need the double alternator pully (right?). But then I lose the 6 ports. It would seem that I'm not gaining enough low end power by ditching the airpump to make up for the low end loss from open ports (?). Damn I wish my brain upgrade wasn't backordered too.
I am a firm believer in a working intake system. The best thing to do is remove the whole intake and clean it. Maybe do a lil porting. Get yourself a set of the pineapple racing sleeves. Have your injectors cleaned. And replaced all of the vacuum hoses. It's kinda expensive; like maybe $250. But the end result is worth it. Two cars are identical except that one has no air pump and no sleeves and the other one does. The one with the working system will create a much broader tourque and horsepower curve which on the street will make the car alot easier to drive and alot more fun if you ask me. If that doesn't help; SEARCH...
