you REALLY should NOT run regular motor oil (I'm assuming you're talking about 10w30), A transmission takes gear oil 80-90+, look it up in the FSM.. I think things like Redline are w85, but i'm not 100% sure on that... either way, regular oil is way too thin.

i've never heard of it before, but wow, that definatly sounds odd... and it sounds like a really bad idea. Knowing what i do of gear systems (Product Design major: Mechanical Design focus), I'll stick to a 85 for above weight oil for the gearbox... I will NEVER EVER try that, but if it works for them, bravo.. *off to try to find other examples of this.*

Ive used dextronll in mine with no problems. (not rx7 but other manual trannies). I used it to smooth shifting on worn syncros, and it runs a bit cooler than gear oil. It does wear slightly faster, but if you are doing maintenace regularly, it runs good. Remember, ALOT of tranfercases(gear boxes) run it. Expecially jeeps.

I've been using Redline in the tranny and diff on both my GXL and my old Triumph Spitfire, and I've noticed decreased gear noise, less vibration and easier shifts in both. (Too bad I put it in too late to save my input shaft bearings...)

Agreed, ATF does work wonders in old trannies. I took ATF out of a trans and put in MT-90 and grinding appeared. I replaced it with new ATF and the grinding disappeared.

I usually run NEO in my own cars.

run NEO now, goin to MT-90 during the rebuild...NEO's not impressing me too much with the synchros (compared to the "regular" gear oil that was in there)...and at $12 a quart, I'd expected more as far as smooth shifting and synchro grind go...
