I'm really interested in getting a Rx-7 but i recently discovered that, according to websites, they only get 17 MPG, and that's kinda harsh with the prices nowadays..

just wondering if that's correct? I'm looking at purchasing a 1988 RX-7.

My daily driver 'vert gets about 18-20 city with me keeping my foot in it all the time.
My T2 gets....dunno exactly, don't care! But I have noticed in the past on some long highway cruises it seemed to get pretty damn good mileage out of a tank. If you shift right and keep out of the secondaries it helps but then who wants to drive like that? Once you get one you won't care about gas prices, you'll be having too much fun!

heh, yea, i'm not too worried about it, but downgrading (MPG) wise from the Civic i currently drive is gonna be harsh. I guess you gotta give up some MPG for some MPH though, you know? :-\

i know little of MPG, bein a canuck, but im gettin around 10K/L on the highway... drafting LARGE trucks.. and keepin the secondaries closed... whatever that works out to for you MPG types, but as mentioned above, i could care less its too much fun to resist, hell i discovered this morning that i can burn say 2 bux in gas on the way, or about 10 bux on the way, same distance, difference being the size of my smile when i get there, some things are worth the extra dime

i get 17 and i floor it all the time. I got a GTUs. I did a good tune up with spark plugs, wires, O2 sensor, oil, coolant, and regrounded my ground to my motor and tranny.

I'm getting a voltage stablizer and goin to see if that helps any. I should be getting it some time this week so I'll keep you guys posted.

If i'm easy on my car i think i will hit 20s but i will never know because its way to much fun flooring it around turns.

If your thinking of getting an RX7 for gas mileage, go to this website http://www.moron.broke//waannabe\\.n....tinypenis.com. Go buy a moped and post your miles per gallon to us later. Otherwise, buy the car, deal with the problems, and shut up. 20 miles to the gallon is for 30 miles per hour, PARKED.

PEACE THE DOG

OH, BY THE WAY, I get 20 mpg on the freeway, 15 in town, and 8 when I redline it. Oops, guess I get 8.

17mpg if you're lucky...
If you do a significant amount of freeway driving, you can get up to 17 if not slightly more.
If the majority of mile are on the freeway, you should break 20mpg...but don't expect THAT much more over 20.

Sorry, but they care is NOT very fuel efficient when it comes to gas mileage.
That's one of the disadvantages of the rotary engine.
If you can't live with the sub-par gas mileage, I'd suggest to get rid of the car and get a 4-cylinder something else.

Just to give you an idea of how BAD the gas mileage can get...
I have a 1987 Turbo II.
I just figured out my last tank of gas was ONLY 12.6mpg.
I drive 3 miles to and from work 7 days a week.
This is strictly surface streets with very little freeway driving.

We don't buy these cars to get "great" gas mileage.

BTW, you could do a keyword search on "mileage"?
This has been rehashed too many times recently cause of rising gas prices.

Did your searching turn up that many members, including myself, have achieved 30-34 MPG cruising and over 22 mpg city driving through aftermarket tuning?
Guess not.
That's fuel economy on par with today's 6 cylinder econoboxes, and sometimes a little better. Not exactly terrible fuel economy.

To be fair, I will also state that Ted (posted above) finds tuning to this level controversial. He believes that the raised combustion chamber pressures and temperatures can damage the engine internals, and does not believe the savings in fuel are worth the extra cost to the engine. This is a worthwhile consideration.
In reply to this, I can state that I have found no increased wear from this level of tuning in any of the engines I have built and run.

I'm getting about 8 on the highway. I'm hoping (let me live with my misconceptions!) that it's the fresh rebuild. Regardless, I'm going to get a new O2 sensor etc soon.

In the city I average anywhere from 10-15 depending on my foot. On the highway under light cruise, 24mpg was my best number. Its running really really good, plugs are golden brown everytime I pull them (once a month), no pops, misses, hiccups or anything of that nature under boost, or under light load. I have a reman motor, and brand new sensors. (02, tps, and an RTEK 1.7 chip). I love it!

No its a shot at the person who started this thread and pure sarcasim

I mean common, if someone is worried about gas mileage they should not be even considering a sports car, but instead looking at some Honda or Scion.

I am a geek and have kept records of my mileage for my cars. My 1987 TII with a streetport and mostly stock everything (more info here https://www.rx7club.com/canadian-forum-42/so-took-car-dyno-466580/ ) puts out the following....

Max 22.208 MPG (US) Max 10.263 L/100km
Avg. 15.317 MPG (US) Avg. 16.032 L/100km
Min 11.556 MPG (US) Min 19.778 L/100km

Not too bad when you just need to set the cruise control and take a roadtrip. Actually it surprised me as my NA was never that great on gas. Does get pretty low when have fun with it of course.

Which contrasts my Toyota daily driver,

Max 42.088 MPG (US) Max 5.589 L/100km
Avg. 29.978 MPG (US) Avg. 7.940 L/100km
Min 22.589 MPG (US) Min 10.413 L/100km
