yes a comprestion check checks the engine compression. lets you know what is going on inside the engine by the numbers it reads. lets you know if your engine is blown, gimped up, ok, running strong ect u get the idea.

Do you know how a piston engine, desiel engine or rotary engine works? To know what a compression check is, you need to know how an engine works.

well u need to read up on rotarys look around this excelent website and go to www.howstuffworks.com and find **** out about engins of all kinds otherwise knowing what it is will do you no good.
Grab the basics from here:

A compression check will let you know the condition of the engines seals. Considering that any engine is basically a big air pump, you need a well a sealed engine to get anything done. The better the engine is sealed, the better it'll run and the more efficient it'll be.
There are certain specs for compression, and if the engine is below par (for it's age or kms, sorry, miles
) then you might wonder what the deal is. Things like bad apex seals, or side seals etc. Low compression, can affect things like mpg, power, starting, and things like that.
So it's a first step when checking the health of a motor.
