What to check first?

I just bought an 87 T2 that runs good and idles good - it smokes a little but my concern is that it spits and sputters some times above 4k. It has upgraded secondaries to 650cc , and nothing to control the extra fuel. Since the ECU wasnt meant for anything bigger than its original configuration. Could this be my problem or should i look for something else. Im new to rotaries so all help is appreciated.

Are you running more boost to compensate the extra fuel?

You definitely need something to control those injectors.
What sort of mods did the previous owner do to run bigger secondaries???..

stock boost, only mods are 2.5 mid pipe-y-pipe, intake, FCD, and the 650cc injs.
