What alternator to use?

Are there any differances between s4 and s5, N/A and turbo alternators for second gen's? Basically, which ones will work for a 90 T2? Thanks,

I've got a FD alternator modified to fit a TurboII, I bought it for my 91, but I'm going to be selling the car.

PM me if you're interested.

I'd like to do the third gen swap, But pretty much 20 more amps dosen't excite me enough for the extra cost. Theres a second gen alternator on ebay for like $40, but it just says 2nd gen and no specific model. Are all the 2nd gen alternators interchangeable?

I might concider the 3rd gen if someone.... had one for sale in the $60-70 shipped neighborhood. Thanks,

hmm

my buddy got one of those FD alts for his FC. said there was no way he could get it to fit. he ended up having to modify the housing on the alt (ie grinder), and even then couldn't get the hinge bolt in. his alt is currently just sitting in that location and its stuck so tight it runs fine with just the bracket side bolt on.

They all use different plugs, and vary in size depending on year and engine.

The FD alt into a FC is a common upgrade that does fit. I suspect that your buddy didn't know what he was doing, or has a non stock set-up for belts or accessories.

Lets say I have a dual pulley on my current alt, and I buy an FD alt, can I interchange the two? Switch the dual off the FC to the FD?

A pully from a FC will not fit properly on a FD alt.

You might be able to drill out the pully and then space it out to be at the right spot. I have heard of a couple people doing that, but have not tried it myself.

well, it depends... as far as plug and play, yes.

But a S5 Turbo alt will bolt into any FC (say a S4 non turbo) without any problems... it just won't plug in. You would need a plug from the Turbo alt and wire it into the S4 system.
