Question What is it?

Heyo all, I'm not too knowledgable on 2nd gens, so I was wondering if you all could help me out.

Pulling into college this morning, I see a guy witha dark blue FC. He's got a flat tire. I pull up next to him and ask if he needs help. He says no. I say BTW, you got a nice car there, want a web page that'll get ya some info on it? (Recruiting for the forum ). He says no, but if you want it, I'll take $1,500 for it. It's got a nice system and all.

After he left, I did a walkaround as I didn't wanna touch someone elses car while they weren't there. It's got rust at the back edge of the glass on the hatch, and some interior damage. (Power Window switches hanging by wires, cracks in trim around clock on dash, driver's side automatic seatbelt tied in knot.)

I couldn't figure out what it was though. It's got a GTU style wing. (Dunno if it's aftermarket though.) It's got an airdam. (Again, dunno if it's aftermarket. Foglights are integrated with it.) 5 lug wheels, and it's an 89+ (Round shades in the tail lights.) It also has a rear wiper.

It didn't have any trim badging on it though. If it was a GTU, GXL, or GTUs, wouldn't it say on the fenders?

It does have an Alpine head unit in it.

$1,500 sounds like a bargain for an FC, and I'm sure I could find the parts to repair it.

With a good engine, that sounds like a good deal. Sorry I can't help you with the model info.

swapping the 89+ round taillights onto 86-88's is fairly common.. The 89+'s have the side moulding the same colour as the car, whereas the 86-88's are all black. The GXL's have sunroofs. Can you describe the wheels?

Hahaha its Pele! Come and join the 2nd gen'ers!!! See how many miles are on it. If the side molding is painted and their is no identifier, it might be a '91. What'd you do with your 1st gen? Ask em what kind of problems he has, there are plenty of cheapo fixes for these cars.. cept the TPS...i hate the TPS...just got a new one

My 1st gen is sitting under a tarp behind my church. I need time to save up the cash to redo all the suspension and steering cause I don't trust it after a 45 MPH collision.

(Why am I buying a 2nd gen if I have no cash? I'm not. It's for someone else. I'm just the local "specialist" :p )

Anywho. I knew fogot to mention something. It does have a sunroof.

The wheels. They are alloys, I believe 5 spoke. I could see the brakes pretty well through em. (Couldn't tell if it was 4 piston or not.) They were Mazda wheels, although I dunno if they were stock.

I don't remember too well, but I beleive the side molding was the same color. I'm more sure that the Mazda badge on the header panel was the same color as the body though. Even then, it's all a bit fuzzy. I'll see it again this Wednesday.

I'm thinkin GXL from all of the above info.

Ya the later years, they didn't really call em GXL's there were:

Turbo
Convertible
Coupe

Thats it...if your friend doesn't buy it and it is in ok shape, I might be interested (if the mileage is sub-120K)

You said that it had automatic seat belts, that was only on the 89-91 models. those model gtu's didnt have a rear wiper. I'd bet it was a GXL.

Actually they did call them GXL's. They earlier SE was replaced by the GTU, but not the 88 style GTU, simply an SE renamed GTU. The GTUs replaced the earlier GTU, and there was also the Turbo, convertable, and GXL models. GXl was only one that had the 2+2 option. Production of the GTUs stopped in 1990, with about 100 or so being made before the discontinuation. So there:p j/k
