Removing Exterior Door Handle (Need quick help please!)

Went to open my driver door today, got it unlocked, lifted the handle. Nothing. ****. After opening it from the inside I started to tear down the door. Looking in the FSM didn't help much since they don't really allow for manual cranks, but I got all the trim off fine. The problem I have now encountered is that I cannot remove the outside door handle. I have one nut removed but cannot reach the other one (toward the rear of the car). Is there a trick for doing this?

BTW, I can see the problem and could fix it if I could get the handle off. A metal connection broke and needs a touch o' welding to be fixed.

Thanks guys, it really sucks having to enter the car from the passenger side.

I have done this. If I remember right there is an access hole for the rear mounting nut. Maybe yours has a grommet over it?

I can't remember if I pulled out the glass to get to the handle mounts. Does anyone else know?

That's it

You were right, there is a little covered hole. I just got everything disconnected and got the rear nut off. Didn't have to remove the glass (thankfully).

I appreciate it greatly. Good looking out.

Now I just need to weld it back together...

Roll up the window, and you should be able to reach the other nut.

Here are some pics of an 88 with power windows:

Cant weld them man, there pot metal. I tried Those handles are cheap, mine did the samething. On both sides! I think that you can get one for about $70 from Mazdatrix, and they come painted, not a bad deal. But I got mine for about $20 from a junkyard and just painted them myself. Welding might work, but I doubt it. probably just break again..soon. Id get another one if I were you. Just my opinion.

Go to the wreck yard and you'll notice a lot of rx's with the drivers handle missing. Says a lot. I tried JBWeld, not good, a wire welder, no good, junk yard, success. 10 bucks. Rolled the window up to access the rear fastener.
