I am sure you guys are going to scream NO, but give me some practical feed back on welding an open diff on an 86 GS RX7. I am doing a very budget build and trying to get sideways as inexpensively as possible. So... Reasonable feedback on a welded diff. Thanks ahead of time

I don't know what kind of feedback you're looking for, but a welded diff is basically not gonna do anything but make you push (understeer) a ton if you've still got stock suspension. Mostly because you're gonna be making so little power. I'd stick with the open diff and work on your entries for the mean time.

Also, post this in the drifting section.


Also, I ran a welded diff on my N/A last year... and it wasn't pretty.

Not the proper way, but Lincoln Lockers have served a purpose for a very long time. I don't think there is a spool available anyhow. Weld outside!

I guess I should have included a little more info... My mistake. I'm probably making a little more power than you think, since its a 305 small block and t5 tranny set up... Also it has KYB full coilovers so suspension isn't stock either...

You've got enough money to put into a V8 swap and no money to put into parts?

Find an S4 Turbo differential. Stronger and it's the clutch type Limited Slip...

You're making enough power that I'd worry about the N/A Ring and pinion set and stub shafts going anyhow.

I think you could also buy one of those lsd conversion kits for open diffs. What is it called again? It's like two little metal blocks and 4 springs or some **** like that and it goes inside the diff.

I didn't realize it would be $350 bucks, you could probably get a T2 diff for that.

personally i ran a welded diff on my 88 se n/a. had megan coils and full exhaust the rest was stock, as long as u learn how to handle it you can drift it just fine, i did. my good friend has alot of trouble getting his turbo2s lsd to serve him as well, it doesnt lock when he wants it to ect and hes pushing 350whp

i think its all personal preference, weld ur diff i say its cheap to do and run it like that, if u decide u dont like it swap in an lsd

Here's the break down:
Chassis 725 including transport
Engine/tranny mount kit 425 including shipping
Engine/tranny: not picked up but 675 including shipping costs
Current total: 1825
I'm trying to build the whole car for 2500 and have it ready to slide in 3.5wks.

So yes I'm looking to weld and power will be about 200HP and 275tqs...

Yeah dude... Its 1985 305 sbc H/O... They never really made a lot of hp. I'll get some work done too it and probably be pushing 300 by end of the summer, but for now its a budget... My father and I started a wholesale tire company, so for a little bit, cash is harder to come by... P.s. and by the way, I need some cheap as hell coilovers just to get me through
