this is a weird problem.
just now i was going to a friends house and stopped somewhere first. my car flooded. got it started and the tachometer quit working and it was acting real sketchy so i went home instead because i didn't trust it. i was looking under the hood with the car running because i was looking to see if an oil leak that i just got fixed was leaking again.(the eccentric shaft bolt came out) and then the car cut off. i started it again after i had to crank it for a second and it jumped up to 3k(tach started working again
) and then cut off and backfired a bunch. i cant get it started now and i have never seen this happen before.
i have been having a problem with my car running poorly and idling erratic for a while now. pretty much it felt like half the power was gone.
anyone know what happened?
thanks, and the car is an 87 na.

check your ground from battery to bottom of driverside strut tower were it bolts down then to the starter honestly, it could cause problems like this, if it doesnt fix your problem its good to rule it out regardless
My tach has done that before on my car, you can just turn it off and start it back up and the tach should be working fine.
It was always when I was deflooding my car when it started up that it would do that, I wouldnt worry about it at all if the tach works the next time you start it up.

I agree with that, anytime the e shaft bolt comes loose spacers can drop and when ya re tighten it your gonna tear somethings up,no to mention no end play there isn't much to begin with but the engine parts need some room to move.you can check buy measuring the depth of the bolt with slide caliper,or check end play to see if spacer dropped.ya also may have a leaking injector causing flooding.
umm you could be fuxored. if that bolt walked out 1st check your oil maybe even drop the pan. http://mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm but chances are if you did set those spacers back in place after the engine shut itself down you should be good to go.. But im thinking you didnt which means the engine is trying to eat those bearings alive. I did it once engine last 804 miles eatting those bearings. replaced the bearings and the front and rear stationary gear and even though it passed two tons of brass through the engine that very engine had 20k more put on it before coolant seal gave out and the rotors and some of the housings are still being used to this day on a car. resilient machines... your engine stopped cuz it was out of balence...

yea the e shaft bolt walked out, i do have a new oil valve on there so that should be good. and my tach is also working today again. i did not drive it but started it up and ran it for a while. once it gets warmed up it stalls. so after about 15 minutes i gotta keep my foot on the gas or else it will kill. i know my injectors are good i got them rebuilt last year. i will check on the grounds. i think last night i just flooded it super bad and it needed to sit. now it is back to the usually problem of running poor and having about half the power it should. i am pretty sure i just got a big vac leak.
well I would make sure you find the vacuum leak.
If you have a bad vacuum leak it will cause the car to backfire after you hit the gas, because unmetered air is getting in, so if your car backfires you could definitely have a vacuum leak.
You can use carb cleaner to check for leaks by putting it on while the car is running and if the idle jumps higher you know that's where the leak is, or at least one of the leaks.
It could be the gaskets and/or the vacuum hoses on the intake so make sure you check both.
