Weird popping noise from exhaust

When my car is sitting at idle it has an irregular popping noise, and when i put the gas to a higher rpm it has a continuos popping noise like 1,2,3,4,5,6,pop and repeats that its a little shorter then that i think. What is causing this?? Pardon the grammer I've been drinking just a little : P

my car does this a little too, but mine is more random. I'm thinking my injectors need to be cleaned. I had a similar problem with my old s13 and new injectors solved it.

well they might just need to be cleaned. first off just get some good injector cleaner from your local auto store and see if it helps any.

Check your timing and change your fuel filter. WOT, high rpm popping (like popcorn?) sounds like detonation to me.

a timing light

1. run engine to operating temperature
2. hook red to + and black to - from timing light to battery
3. puth the other lead (clip) on leading 1 (L1) spark plug wire
4. Shine timing light on eccentric shaft pulley, make sure the mark and indicator pinner are aligned, if not, loosen crank angle sensor bolt, and adjust crank angle sensor until the mark is aligned with the indicator pin
4. Do the same for the trailing 1 (T1)

It might just be raw fuel getting burnt in the exhaust.

A bad or misadjusted TPS can also cause alot of backfiring...I've mostly seen it on deceleration though. Just a thought.

detonation / pinging doesn't sound like popping, it's usually more of a rattle sound. I wouldn't be too concerned.

Thats how I always had the sound of detonation in rotary engine explained to me...is a popping noise. In a piston car I've heard it several times, sounds like metal ball boucing around in the cylinder..

ping, ping, ping ping.

Never heard a rotary though, I could very well be wrong.

the car wouldn't drive if he was pinging with no load anyway... as far as I can see.

No load at high rpm?

Rotaries without catalytic convertors will pop at idle, yes, especially without a connected airpump. However, popping under WOT makes no sense.

On an NA rotary, it sounds like popcorn. Perhaps you are thinking of a piston motor.

As for not ebing too concerned... ANY engine noises, especially those sounding of detonation, should be of great concern.

This would only happen on deceleration, and yes you are right.

Not too many rotaries run rich enough on accel to cause backfiring.

How is your exhaust? any possible leaks?

How about some more information? Only happen when you floor it at high rpms? Partial load? RPM specific? Fuel grade used? Happen on decel?

doesnt even sound like ping on a piston....
it sound like someone using a hammer to knock on the rachet to get the exhaust bolt out...

if you get that noise only in neutral and not in gear, then no way it is detonation

just ignore the noise...

My seven only popped on warm up. It has been streetported and has all of the cats removed. Gas is just burning off in the exhaust piping. After I installed the K&N FIPK and a freer flowing exhaust, the sound went away.

Moes detonation immediately cause your engine to go?
At the begining of last summer I found out the hard way that one of my injector plugs wasn't working. It was actually my primary injector for the front rotor, and I had an insane popping out the exhaust when I went into boost.
Figuring I screwed the new rebuild straight out I took it to mazda for a comp test.
Suprisingly it still has compression.
So was THAT probably detonation I heard?

I'm also curious when doing a compression test on a mazda tester does the car need to be warmed up to get the true readings? Because he did it with the car cold.

The car has been sitting for winter and this thread has me nervous again...
sorry if im hijacking.
