Weird Noise

So this is going to be hard to explain and if i take a video you probably wont be able to hear it but say im in gear going slow and i push the clutch pedal in there is this sort of... chuck chuck chuk noise if you can imagine, it sounds like its coming from somewhere inside or near the bell housing, like its vibrating back and fourth 3 times when the clutch is taken off the fly wheel, does anyone have feed back or have similar noise ?

quite possibly the throw out bearing in need of replacement, or just overall a noisy clutch.

More information is needed about the setup to give a possibly better responce.

Yeah, you can get around no problem if its just a bit noisy, especially if you already plan to replace the components. But when the trans comes out, id check to see if the input shaft has any abnormal play, and replace the pilot bearing (which could also be toast)

Uh, about the only part that might need an impact gun is the flywheel, and its held on by a 52 or 54mm nut (i totally forget which it is right now, but its god aweful huge). This single nut is torqued down with 300+ ft/lbs so it 'might' be tricky to get off if the flywheel needs resurfacing.

As for the pilot bearing itself, its situated inside the e-shaft and needs to be pulled out without destroying it (preferably), you need a blind-hole bearing puller or the mazda tool (mazdatrix sells them as well). The right tool makes removing the bearing a cake walk, as oppsed to destroying the bearing and then needing to cut it out without damaging the shaft.

when you change you clutch this summer, if you clutch makes it that long, inspect your fly wheel also. if it shows major wear, or it is missing teeth, pull it. it would make it easier with an impact wrench but i have pulled two with a hand held wrench. its on there pretty good but not impossible without an impact. as for the noise. it is possible that your front universal joint, closest to the tail shaft of the transmission, is worn/loose. by that i mean it could have free play in it. you can test this by simply crawling under your car and trying to rotate your drive shaft while your back wheels are on the ground. if the drive shaft moves, you need u-joints.

You would need a new driveshaft if the U-joints are in fact wore out. The U-joints in the FC driveshaft (s4 and s5) are non-servicable and unreplacable. The only 'fix' is to buy either a new stock driveshaft or an aftermarket shaft with servicable U-joints (mazdatrix sells both).

Yeah, tis always something. But on the bright side, the stock driveshaft and U-joints survived 20+ years of abuse/neglect and general wear and tear. Once replaced its not likely to go bad in the near future unless something catastrophic happens.
