weird noise

It seems whenever i don't have the clutch depressed at idle that the tranny makes a whinning noise i think? But i can't tell if its happening while i'm driving because i cannot hear over my exhaust, any ideas fellas?

throwout/release bearing is a clutch component.. itll probly better to get a whole ne
w clutch kit while you're at it.

Yeah its your throwout bearing. Basically, any time you need to drop the tranny if your clutch is half worn you should just replace it while you're there. Think about a lighter flywheel while you're at it, it's a reasonably priced upgrade that makes a huge difference without any real drawbacks.

It isnt that important do do ASAP, in my mustang when I got it they were really worn out, when I would take off, sounded like a bunch of marbles, drove for about 4 months like that, no damage to anything.

hmm so just replacing the tranny won't do anything about the throw out bearing?

I wouldn't suggest (to a kid that doesn't know what a throw out bearing does) to put a lighter flywheel on.......

Just leads to those "how do I get that big nut off"

Remember kids, its 2 1/8" Socket...........and a huge *** breaker bar or strong Impact wrench

i said earlier in the post i'm not going to mess with it, the shop is going to do all the tranny work i don't have the tools or space to do any work on the transmission, as i stated earlier.

i had the same problem awhile back. a lot of people told me it was the throw out bearing, but it didn't make sense to me. not to say that you guys are wrong, but just offering a 2nd opinion.

wouldn't the throw out bearing make noise when you DO press down on the clutch pedal. thats when it touches the pressure plate fingers right? so that's when it would make the most noise.

but you're saying it makes noise when you are NOT pressing on the clutch pedal. that means the throw out bearing is only slightly toughing the pressure plate and the noise would have to come else where.

I found my problem to be the tranny mount on the bar that goes perpendicular to the tranny. the dealer called it the tranny cross member. that rubber piece on the cross member was torn. so the tranny was slightly tilted back, putting additional load on one of the bearings on one of the shafts. i guess the bearing was making the noise

i could be wrong...lol but it fixed my problem. just another thing to check that you don't have to take the tranny off to see

That sounds more correct. My '86 and '88 both made the same noise. I still have the '88 and the noise never got any worse. I just thought it was a normal transmission noise for the FC.

Dont you need to remove your flywheel to pull the TOB and replace it? Me and some friends tried to remove it once...2 guys with a 2 foot breaker bar and a 5 foot pipe on that...and the ****** wouldnt come off. any advice for the do-it-yourselfers?

No, the throwout bearing doesnt make sound until you release the clutch, See how it works is when you release the clutch, the throwoutbearing is supposed to also come away. If it is worn out, it will not release right and it will still be touching and makeing noise.

When my clutch isnt pushed in, the sound is there. when i push my clutch in, it goes away, not really fast, takes about 1.5 seconds, to slow down, to a stop. what would that be? if it isnt the throwout?
