Weird Engine Swap??
Hey guys I am pretty new to the import scene and am rapidly gaining knowledge. I am thinking about getting a 1990 RX-7 GXL. I was wondering how difficult it would be to swap the stock 13B engine from the 1990 with one from a 1993-96 13B REW engine. Also do you know anywhere in the Atlanta Georgia area that does that kind of work. All help will be greatly appreciated.

i dont know of anyone who has swpped in a 3rd gen motor, and honestly i cant really see a point. just get a 90 turbo car and build that. it can be quite competitive with a 3rd gen for half the cash. just my opinion anyway.

im not trying to be mean, and im only trying to help. itd be a lot of work to fit a 3rd gen motor into an FC. completly different wiring, intake, exhaust. and the motors are pretty much the same internaly as the 89 up FC motor. but to answer your question, yes it could be done. it would be quite difficult and require alot of work, but it could be done. i dont see a point cuz why spend all that time and effort, when you could go out and buy a T2 and with the money you saved from having to buy a 3rd gen motor, you could beat a 3rd gen. when there is a turbo car like yours already available, why not just get it? especialy if you already want a turbo. just my opinion man. if you want to do it, then do it.

Ditto,
Third gen engines are hard to come by to boot. Why bother. Either go the T2 route or go buy a third gen.
You will thank yourself later.
of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong,

yup, the earlier 2nd gen cars ('86-'88) are cheaper to buy and are a little lighter, but the later ones ('89-'91) look better I think. Just get yourself a late 2nd gen TurboII motor and drop it in. Or have someone build you a Turbo engine and turbo setup and do all the fuel modifications necessary to keep it from blowing up, and drop that in it.

You're looking at custom engine mounts or redrilling the center housing and adapting an FC oil pan onto the 13B-REW.  It's a lot of work whatever the car you choose...
