Question Weird electrical problem...

Well....I posted a few days ago about my car not starting, I had no power whatsoever, it seemed the battery was completely dead. I wouldnt get warning lights or the buzzer or anything. Then after just playing with it awhile, it all of a sudden had power when I turned the key...and fired right up. Im like WTF?? So I drove it around a bit, the voltimeter was steady on 14 where it is supposed to be, everything seemed fine. So I parked , turned it off, started it again, everything seemed fine. Well the next day I went to start it, and everything was dead again, no warning lights, buzzer, nothing. ( well ,They came on for a second, but it was very faint, then they went off) So I thought maybe I had a dead cell in my battery or something. Just for kicks I put the battery in my friends truck just to see if it would start it, and his truck fired right up..once again I was like . Put the batt back in my car, and it seemed dead. After turning the key for a minute or two, all of a sudden it got power and fired right up. That was earlier today, and Its started fine since then, but I was driving just a few minutes ago, and I noticed my voltimeter acting up. It was moving alot, from like 10v-15v. Whenever I presses the break pedal, it would drop to 10V and the lights would dim. Sometimes it would dip as low as 8V. I cleaned my Battery terminals, I have a fairly new alternator, as well as battery. I suspect a faulty connection somewhere, but have no clue as where to start looking. If you have any ideas Id appreciate it, and sorry for the long post, thanks for reading.

yeah man, I told you to clean your battery terminals, did you? Everything you say points to that. Including my own experiences. A cleaner for them is like 5 bucks, I got mine at a local hardware store. If you can't find one, just find some kind of metal bristled brush and clean the terminals and connectors.

Yes, battery terminals are clean, thats like the 1st thing i did. terminals are clean and on tightly. I also jacked it up and checked the connections on the starter, they all seemed fine.

Ok... I hope you got all the corosion off. Do you have a multimeter? You could check at the main fuse the next time you have a power problem if you have power there. Try the other fuses. Make sure you have a good ground going from negative to the body.

when the car goes dead do the headlights still work?

If not: bad ground or battery cable.

UHm....when it goes completely dead and it will not start...no, the headlights will not work, or parking lights, nothing works. Is there a "common" place to look for a bad ground??

Is your car stock? Have you relocated the battery? Did you mess with the stock cables at all for a custom stereo? Does your car have the factory alarm? Will the dome light even come on during your power loss? Have you ever had a problem blowing a fuse in the engine bay's main fuse block?

Give more info; get more answers!

Ok, my mods are in sig.

I have done nothing to alter the cables except put on new terminal clamps, but that was over a year ago, they are still on nice and good. I have no custom stereo

My car has no alarm

No, no lights will come on at all when I have power loss

I have never blown a fuse

And Aaron Cake, Im not sure I know what your talking about, I assume the fuse in the engine bay...but what about it??

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming.

The main fuse in the engine bay is located on the fuse block. It is either a 70A or 80A unit, and is bolted to the battery cable. I have seen them become intermittant before.

Get a multimeter and learn how to use it so that you can figure out whats wrong. It will take less time than guessing. At least get a test light.

You have an intermitant connection somewhere(probably corrosion), and its probably close to the battery. Check all connections from the negative post to the chassis and engine (take them apart and clean them.) Then follow power from the positive terminal to the fusebox under the hood, then to the fuse box in the drivers area.
