weight saving
has anyone ever thought of looking at some of the various brackets and mounts on our cars? take for instance, the convertable underside cross member, the rear sub frame, the pwr steering/ac bolt on bracket..
whatever, and refabricating our own brackets with a welder and some aluminum piping...whatever, still bolting everything up in place, but out of a lighter material and with less bulk? think about the rear sub frame alone? think if you could make like an underside strut bar and bracket system in place of the heavy *** crossmembers and such

you could stop drinking soda and loose more weight than you would making a new rear subframe.
plus the subframe is weight down low and in the rear, which is where you want it.

Yes you could probably save a few pounds that way, but it'll be a lot of effort, and in the end you'll be lighter if you always only fill the tank halfway or things like that. Converting to manual steering and getting rid of the AC will ditch a bunch of weight. Starting with a non sunroof car will save weight. Not having the rear wiper will save weight. All of these things will save you more than what you propose, but if you really want to, then go for it, just don't expect a miracle. You can even save 10lb or so by removing extra, unused wires from the wiring harness.

heres what i did to my old fc
no a/c no p/s
went around a took off everything i didnt need spare tire/jack/ (washer res., extra wires etc..)
i took out the sound deading tar stuff as well and just ran 1 seat at the track
mazda motorsports used to make lexan stuff to replace the glass
when racing take out your whole conv. set up (top/cover/etc..)

you're really just getting at semantics...how much are you willing to pay? yea, you could get that stuff done in aluminum, but cast at the same specs is going to cost you more than steel (plus it's not a high-volume part, so cost is going to be through the roof anyway)
at what point do you just get all the metal parts cast in titanium alloy and have a tank that's really light :P

Dude just sell the vert and get a hardtop if you care about weight, otherwise just live with stripping off obvious parts, making a lighter exhaust (side exit?), small racing battery, fixed headlamps, lexan door windows, stripped down wiring loom etc. Much easier stuff than remaking **** in aluminium.

why would you want to drop rigidity and structural integrity of an oem part to save weight when there are so many more simple options to drop the weight?

i'm actually putting the paxton 1220 blower on it with the rb true duals and maybe a 25 shot of nitrous.
i was just wondering if i could save an extra pound or two here and there to even things out
btw, i'm a girl, not a dude the pic in my profile is me.
