Question Weight Reduction on Convertable

What can I take off my vert to make its weigh less? AE: Useless stuff. What if i remove the hard part of the bumpers(both front and back), will this cause its to sway on the highway when cruising?

If you're wanting something light you might as well get a coupe. It's hard to lighten up the vert without losing stability and drivability.

hell I removed all emission, all a/c stuff (under hood and interior), and p/s. I also got lighter seats, I plan on getting fiber glass side panels... looking for a fiber glass trunk lid but can't find one so I might have my friend make one... that's a start for the most part... don't know how much it will help though...

maybe for an n/a vert, but I'm boosted with a t66 and a massive fmic and of course some upgraded fuel goodies.. might not hit low 13 but I'm pretty sure I'll dip in the 13's... but only time and track slip will tell...

here is there website, but they don't the engine online, you need to call the order in... in fact the engine is an s5, which has some advantages to the s4.

loose the door panels. Mine are heavy in my vert. I also want to just get a sheet of aluminum and bolt the arm rest back on for the race look. Plus gives a little extra leg room for after market seats.

Dude, they're made mainly from cardboard and plastic. They are not heavy. Changing them is going to make basically zero difference to performance, especially to a 'vert. Sheet aluminium panels look purposeful in a real race car, but look plain silly in a street car.

yes I agree that they are made of carboard and plastic and as all of us vert owners know are shitty designed top leaks and that cardboard gets heavy. Trust me mine alteast weight 10lbs each. And with the aluminum bolted on with the arm rest and window controls it will look good.

With replacing the interior pieces, the biggest problem is what's their is already ultra-light and anything you add will be heavier.

I think the biggest weight savings is switching to lightweight fiberglass front nose, rear bumper, & side panels. There's a drastic difference between the OEM nose & aftermarket ones. A C/F or fiberglass hood & trunk is mostly for show, but it does help a bit.

Converting to a single exhaust, electronic air pump, will save a bit too. I've read non-body stuff behind the dash can be removed, but not sure what that is. Getting an adjustable & confortable racing style seat might help a bit.

I'd also like the know the weight difference between the OEM noise insulation & the spray-on or heatgun shrink stuff. Also if it cancels nose as well.

I recently replaced my door panels on my 88 vert. Yes, they are heavier than you think. With removing door speakers and the panel, you really feel your door is lighter when you are opening/closing it.

I think you just hit the nail there... I can't imagine the panels themselves are that heavy -- aluminum is going to be as heavy or heavier than the same relative size/thickness of cardboard & plastic I would think.

If you don't want the sound, remove all stereo equipment. That means all speakers (those magnets add up), all amps, etc.

In torrential rain mine don't get even a bit damp. Even if they did, water dries, so the cardboard does not "get heavy".

Trust me mine alteast weight 10lbs each.
So by swapping to aluminium sheet you're saving maybe 15lb total in a car that weighs ~3000lb (0.5%), plus you get ghetto looks as a bonus. Yippee...

There are far more effective ways to loose weight than this. If you get to the point where you think the door trims are too heavy, you should've bought a lighter car.

Autocross. I'm shooting for 1900lbs.
I thought about starting with a convertable, since I could cut the windshield off entirely, according to the rules. But by the time I got down to the minimum weight the chassis would be about as stiff as a wet noodle.

We have such creativity busters around this forum. 15lbs isnt much but with my t2/vert I have added a lot of weight with motor/tranny/suspension/turbo/intercooler and a ton of other things I am just trying to get it back down to a reasonable number.

"you should've bought a lighter car."

No I bought the car I wanted. I wanted a turbo charged convertible which is the best 2nd gen their is. And until you have owned a vert and then completed a t2 swap you can comment on this.
