Weight Question?!
Ok i was wondering about on some of the weight issues on the car. I'm trying to get the weight down on my car and I have recently tonight weighed my car at a truck weigh station and got 2460 pds, 2720 with me in it, damn i need to lose some wieght. I also had about 20 pds of crap in there too so I'm saying it is about 2440 pds round about that area. So i'm wondering is this doing pretty good so far, also is it possible to get the car down to 2000 pds? Also the car is a 88 GXL

Haha yeah I weigh 260 lbs, I did weigh 290 about 6 months ago. When I got out of high school i weighed 200 pds and got a desk job that i worked for 3.5 years and gained 90 pds, now that I work in a car shop I have lost some weight, still trying to get back to 200 pds.
Well basically this car is goign to be nothing but for racing, all sound deadning coming out, lexan windows, lightweight seats, etc etc.

My orginal goal was to get the car down to 2200 pds but i was also thining my car weighed about 2700 pds, now findong out that its lighter than i thought i have reset my goal to 2000 pds.
I just want to have a 4-1 power to weight ratio

And if you are going with lexan, gutted interior you can go down to 2000lbs. I have a friend who took a 2600lbs+ GXL, gutted the hell out of it and with roll cage, coil over suspension, 15in wheels, Stock TII brakes, a perpheral carburated motor, a Turbo II tranny, dash and electrical work, etc., ended up at 1900lbs (dry, no fluids). So i guess your goal is atainable.

ok heres so far whats been done that would affect weight.
Tii hood
Gutted trunk
bye bye bumper beams and brackets
No emission componets
Misc brackets removed from motor bay
Pop up headlights, brackets, motors, etc removed
Power antenna removed, replaced with the floppy **** style antenna
Half of door panels removed, just got the top piece and armrest
Thats all i can think of right now
the things I still have planned on doing are
Lexan rear window, removing rear wiper
Carbon Fiber hood, making my self
Lightweight racing seats
Removing dash and replacing with a fiberglass one
Finish gutting the rest of the interior
Fiberglass fenders, not sure if will weigh less than stock one or not, doing a wide body
Tearing down the complete wiring harness and removing ever wire that is no longer used
Removing all sound deadning material and some off the tar under the car, anyting i can get off easily
Tein RA coilvers, should weigh less that stock
Removing sunroof assembley, either welding up the one there now or just doing a piece of lexan and have it just popup like the 240sx do
Removing Seat belts, relacing with 5 point harnesses
Also taking out misc **** that is no longer used, mainly switches and stuff
Having all the lights and wipers and other things controlled from a switch board
Thats everthing i believe.
I like the car the way it drives now with pushing very close to 200hp to flywheel and 2460 pounds its pretty quick

haha, theres a little problem there, i love the FBs, infact so much that I was about to buy 2 of them that run for a $100 a piece. But I don't fit in them, 6ft tall and 260pds not a good combination in a FB.

go w the lexan sunroof. that's alot lighter than metal. im not sure if you have this in your car but you can also gut your AC. if you're just using it to race in, then you prolly don't want a radio in it cuz it's hard to hear w the engine revved up high all the time. so you can gut that and all the wires and speakers too. that should shave a good amount off too. im not too sure about the tein coilovers... but i have some jic and they weigh a bit more than the stock ones do. but it makes up for it in preformance. get some nice light rims too. that will shave some more off also.

I honestly think the carbon fiber hood vs. the aluminum hood is not much of a mod, the aluminum hood is already very light, unless you have a steel hood and then its a plus.

plus remember your gonna be puttin in a roll cage... and body parts can come straight off too... for a race car... make something out of fiberglass that just barely fits and looks like ****.

trying to build a racecar
You've got a good plan going so far.
If it really is for racing, go ahead and ditch the rest of the door panel and cut out the metal behind it. Then you can cut out the side impact door beam (assuming you are taking necessary precautions if side intrusion is a real threat). All together you will end up with a door about 10lbs lighter. I don't know if I ever posted this picture on here... so here what my door looks like currently. I even removed the stock latch and replaced it with a home-made aluminum actuator.
Also, go with a fuel cell. The stock tank is pretty heavy.
Good luck
