The ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor is on the back of the water pump housing.
The placement of the IAT (intake air temp) sensor depends on your car. S4 NAs have it on the dynamic chamber under the ASV valve. TIIs have it on the dapter that connects the throttle body to the intercooler pipe. I don't remember where S5 NAs have it but likely it's on the intake plenum.

don't know how often they go bad but my local expert at the shop here says when they both go bad it cause havoc on the car. my car doesn't start unless i pump it full of gas than it won't stay running if i let off the gas/.

They will either fail open, or give a wrong reading. It's not common for them to fail, but they do fail occasionally. They are not related, so failure in one does not mean the other is bad as well.

Generaly the water thermo sensor becomes brittle and falls apart as the electrical connector is plastic and in the engin bay. If they both went bad your car wouldent go crazy or anything if I understand what you asking mikeg9876 and if thats what you expert is saying id find me a new one.

ok thanks i have gone through almost everything i can think of on this thing, i mean i checked the plugs, wires, vaccuum leaks, fuel pump, lines everything just can't figure it out, than i took it to kramer mazda up here in calgary and there is a guy there that has been doin rx7 for awhile, we scanned it and it came back sayin the maf, air intake and waterthermo was gone. so i'm just slowly replacing these to see if hopefully it will stay running without me stayin on the gas.
