Waterpump housing....

What are some things that cause the waterpump housing gasket to engine blow?

Its a gasket, they're not going to last forever. Replace it, and get that bad boy back on the road.

I replaced it this morning already. It looks like when it was replaced, about 200 miles ago, by a shop that repalced my OMP lines didn't repalce the gasket, just put some goop on it and that's it. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=480923

If the two shims are missing, the gasket will not last long.

I'm hoping it was just a bad gasket. I left the shims on there, no leaks so far!

Check your water pump/water pump pulley for out of round. If the pulley/flange are warped at all, it will continually blow this gasket until the upper mounting 'ear' eventually breaks off at the iron. Its not uncommon.
You'll need a dial indicator and a magnetic base.

These gaskets don't just blow for no reason or due to old age. There is a mechanical issue here.

It actually happened at 9k rpm's after I had my car back from the shop for about 200 miles. But while taking it appart, I'm just not sure if they had replaced the gasket, or if they just smeared some goo on it and called it good.

There is another reason for torque specs, besides making sure the bolt or nut remains in place. From the looks of that gasket, it may have been over torqued and compromised.

there's no way that is a new gasket. i seriously doubt they would order one from mazda either because that is about the only place you can get one aside from various other sites but since they don't sound like a rotary specialty shop i'm thinking they just reused the gasket which was already on its last leg.

I wouldn't doubt it if they over tightened the bolts...There were 2 broken off bolts. One on the waterpump housing, and one of the four bolts that hold on the main pulleys.

They do specialize in rotary's. www.gtgarage.com. They were sharing a spot with pineapple racing www.pineappleracing.com and they have gaskets there.
