Water Temp thermo sensor

The s4 water temp termo sensor is different than that of the s5 thermo sensor.

Instead of swapping out the thermo sensors between the two motors I just spliced and wrapped the wire to the s4 thermo sensor and kept it.

However, I have irratic readings.

When the engine is run and then sits for about 3 hours I can go get into the car and turn it the key to the ACC position and the temp gage is already half up.

While I'm driving it goes all the way up, and then suddenly drops to half. Back and forth.

Should I get a brand new s5 temp sensor? Or should I look for problems elsewhere in the system?

water temp sensor and a thermo sensor are not the same ones IIRC. The thermo sensor is in the water pump housing and the Temp sensor is just the one that sits at the bottom driver's side of the radiator that has to wires off of it.

Hmmm.

Well, I'm talking about this sensor that sits right by the oil pressure sending unit.

If I disconnect this wire I have no heat gage reading.

Once its connected the heat gage goes up, but irratically.

Perhaps this sensor is measuring the temp of the Block?
I assumed it to be a water temp sensor.

Are you talking about the sensor that is on the back of the engine by the oil pressure.

Okay:

Temp sender my the oil pedestal is the temp senser for the gauge. Its interchangeable between S4, and S5, but it has a different connector on it.

Temp sender on radiator is your Water Temp Switch. A member of the AWS family.

Temp sender behind water neck is the Water Thermo Sensor. A member of the Emissions family.

When you live in an emissions state, you get used to it!
