so my car is not allowing the water to circulate through the radiator and back to cool off the engine. it just keeps getting more and more hotter. i just installed a new thermostat and seal for that. i flushed the system out with water but it still does not let any coolant to pass the thermostat when the engine is running. any ideas?

 

i let my 87 rx7 idle for about 5-10 minutes today and the coolant started to bubble and the thermostat never opened. how long should it take for the thermostat to open?

 

How do you know that the coolant is not circulating? Is the top radiator hose NOT getting hot after the car has run for a considerable time? Remember, the thermostat will not open until the coolant reaches a prescribed temperature (~180 degrees F) is reached, and will not fully open until a higher temp (~200 degrees F) is reached.

Try this for a test. Remove the thermostat and see if the coolant will flow w/o the thermostat in place. If it still does not flow, suspect a total failure of the water pump, a missing or slipping belt, or a very bad clog somewhere in the cooling system.

If it does flow, test the thermostat to verify it is opening at the prescribed temp. That is, put it in a pan of water on a stove, heat the water until it reaches ~180 degrees F and observe the thermostat to determine if it is opening. Heat the water to ~200 degrees F and verify that it has fully opened. If it checks out, reinstall the thermostat according to instructions in the workshop manual, warm up the engine and see if the coolant is now flowing.

okay so i just checked the thermostat and it works fine and cleaned out the hose that leads to it... could my problem be a water pump?

 

just wondering IF you installed the thermostat incorrectly..it should be installed Pointy Side up..the bottom has the Thermo spring so when it gets hot it opens up.If the thermostat is installed backwards,it never "sees" hot Coolant,so it remains closed.

 

Of course it could be.
Could also be that you have a blockage in the radiator.

 

ok well i know i installed the thermostat right. i just baught a water pump today so im gonna go install it now and see what happens
