very strange electrical problems

Well I finally got my rebuild up and running. I went to turn on the lights and the headlights work fine but the gauge lights come on. The domelight and also the lights on the door for when they are ajar work either. I figured it was just a blown fuse of some sort and thought it would be an easy fix. I took her for a spin and noticed that the turn signals don't come on in the gauge cluster. I decided to have my friend check to see if they worked outside and nadda. It was at night and my lights were on but when he went out there to check the taillights weren't on. He told me to press the brake and so those don't come on either! The really weird part is: when the car is started the door ajar light on the warning cluster is on, but the doors are closed. Once I checked the blinkers and it started to flash the door ajar warning light. Now when driving, if I hit the brake the door light comes on and when I let off, the clock comes on!!!! I just don't get it. I checked all the fuses and they're ok. When installing the motor, I did make a mistake hooking up the starter and it overloaded the system and burnt one ground wire. Maybe somehow this could've fried the CPU??? Any body have any input on this?

Thanks,
Aaron

You think thats bad? To change the stations on my stereo I hit the horn button... to blow the horn I turn on the hazards

Sorry... borrow a friends cpu and see if that is the problem, recheck grounds, etc.

sounds like the CPU is unplugged or damaged.

Check the fuses first though.

I have rebuilt ones if you need one

I checked every fuse and they were ok. I will check to make sure that the cpu is plugged in properly. If that doesn't do it, then I'll take out my friends cpu and see if that does it. If it works with the different cpu I'd be very interested in one of yours. How much do you want for one???

well, turns out that swapping the cpu didn't help. I even unplugged the cpu and when turning on and off the headlights, the door ajar and clock toggled respectively. I have no idea where to start but I'm just trying to look at the wiring diagrams in the manual to get more familiar. Anyone think of anything that could cause this?? I can't drive it since it doesn't even have any brake lights. Could a bad ground do something like this? Any more input would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, thats interesting stuff... Not to assume anything, but did you happen to reverse the poles on your battery accidentally? Its been my experience that wierd electrical problems crop up after this has happened.

Also, have you tried to re-ground the ECU?

How did you check the fuses??? You need to use a digital multi-meter and test them with it. You can't just look at them and always see if they are bad.

Its either that or you have something plugged in wrong (as long as the spare CPU was the right type and works in the car it came from). You did plug in all three plugs into the CPU right???

Oooh...Been there done that! Good point Icemark! I tore down an 80 GMC pickup for bad interior lights, only to find it was a fuse that LOOKED good, but tested bad.

i have a dmm, how do i test it exactly? sorry, I'm not too familiar with electrical stuff... I didn't reverse the battery, but i hooked up the starter wrong and the battery wasn't grounded properly so it overloaded so I can see how some fuses could have gone bad from that. I didn't know that they had to be checked by a dmm. Hopefully it is just some fuses. I checked the old cpu and it was plugged in right, the one I checked it with was plugged in right too. Although, the one I tested was from an s5... But, even with the cpu unplugged some stuff was still acting strange, which leads me to believe that the problem is elsewhere. Thanks everybody for your help; once I get out of school tomarrow I will be all over those fuses.

THE S5 CPU WON'T WORK IN A S4!!!!

You'd be lucky if you didn't blow the CPU up... Didn;t you notice that the S5 CPU has different plugs in different spots??? Like the S4 CPU has two plugs on the bottom, while the S5 only has one...

And the brakes won't work, the turn signals won't work, the hazards won't work, the Horn won't work, some of the idiot lights won't work properly if the CPU is not plugged in correctly. ALL THREE PLUGS

well, my friends car was a s5 n/a -> s4 TII swap. I know he changed some of the wiring harness but I didn't know if he changed everything. I guess he did because the cpu I put in is exactly the same as mine. Also, I plugged ALL THREE PLUGS in! So it must have been a s4 which worked fine in his car. But like I said, some stuff was still acting strange without the cpu being plugged in at all. So how do you test the fuses with a dmm???

nevermind, I figured out how to test them on my own. I'll post my findings...

well now, don't I feel dumb. In the whole mealstrom of trying to figure out my previous electrical problem, I was pulling fuses left and right and not paying attention. So in the main fuse box, I put the btn 60a fuse where there is supposed to not be any fuse. Everything works like normal. I am just happy that it was an easy fix, but at the same time I thuroughly feel like a dumbass for screwing up something that basic. Thanks everyone for trying to help me out.
