very slow vert

I've been driving my 2.7 biturbo Audi for a while. Enough said, right! Now, after letting the 7 sit in my brother's garage for over 6 months, the Rx7 is slow. Real slow.

I'm considering swapping in the low gear ratio differential from a manual coupe to ease the pain some. This may sound typical, but with a budget of about $500, what's the best turbo to buy? Some of that will have to go to piping and maybe a different intercooler (since I have a stock intercooler for an FD that fits perfectly). I already have fuel management taken care of, and exhaust won't be a problem since I'm an experienced welder (same for the exhaust manifold). So if I figure about $100 for piping, probably $50 for couplers, that leaves $400 for a turbo.

This is just to get me off the ground, and I'll be continually upgrading everything as I go along, little by little.

As of now, I already have:
225lph Walbro fuel pump
800cc injectors
SAFC II
NGK wideband

With that kind of budget, you're in for a world of hurt.

Make sure the engine is up to it. I recommend you follow the setup that Aaron Cake has http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/naturbo1.htm

He's done a very good job of turboing an NA.

Like I said before though, make sure your engine can handle it. Do you have good compression? Are there any weak links in your drivetrain? They aren't rated for much more than the output of a stock NA.

I HIGHLY recommend using a stock S5 turbo and manifold.

Figuring in that I have all the peripherals necessary for fuel management except maybe an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and the engine is just broken in on Atkins 2piece apex seals (about 10k miles) I'd say it's up for the task

Seriously though, I don't want to waste my money on a really old stock Hitachi turbo that's going to wear out on me that soon, and from looking at Aaron's website, I could do alot better than using the stock manifold by fabricating my own using a 13b flange from mazdatrix and some sch40 weld pipe.

park the car and inject more of a budget into the project.

look for another NA car that needs a motor, swap your motor into that car- sell it and use profits for turbo engine swap.

This is why I visit this website almost once every 6 months. I get fed up with the rude, pointless comments that people post to every question ever asked. Do you really think that I'm going to need an extreme budget for such a small task? For Christ's sake, I have completed much more difficult tasks than making a slowass car slightly more fun to drive. I work on nuclear powerplants for a living, and know more ins and outs of systems that I guarantee none of you even want to think about.

This **** isn't rocket science. I asked a simple question, tried to be as nice as possible, and this is what I get.... seriously. If you don't have an answer, don't reply.

This car was my first ever. I've had it for years. I'm all grown up now, have a wife and little baby girl. Life is extremely stressful at times, and the only outlet I have is working on my cars, and then driving them to get that satisfactory feeling of a job well done.

I guess I'm done here now, and my profile can be deleted. This is apparently a useless website.

I dont know why you read that as rude, im telling you as another vert owner who had his car for 15 years that the best thing you can do is swap the entire drivetrain over. Once you get it running with a mild set up you will get bored of it and want more- then where to go? At least with a full turbo drivetrain and motor you will have plenty of room for upgrades.

I dont know what was rude about my reply?

I do the same to self fund my projects which is fix another one up and sell it.

Go for it! Whats it matter if you toast a na transmission? People practiaclly give away NA transmission and you obviously have a DD. Here are my concerns.

1. Can the SAFC control spark? Im not familiar with it but I dont think so. You will kill your motor the first time you hit boost if your running NA spark timing on a turbo NA motor. Upgrade that to a standalone. You can build a Megasquirt for about $300 or less if you bargin shop.

2. Your 800cc fuel injectors may be too small for a bigger then stock turbo. Either pick up a stock blow dryer or think about bigger secondaries. the stock turbo should make nice power on a NA motor.

3. if you still want a bigger turbo then get a 60-1. here is a great thread on specs:

https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo-faq-122/60-1-specs-210078/

but your going to need bigger injectors, a standalone, and might as well buy a couple spare na transmissions as your going to need some!
