O.K. so I picked up a 91 and am trying to get the top to work


Suggested --->Couldn't find "center hub nut"... my owners manual showed two holes with phillips head screws to loosen/tighten .. that didn't do anything.. so I started looking into the switch.. took it all apart and found the pieces had come off there contacts. there was also a lot of sand/dirt . So I cleaned it up and put all the parts where they needed to go, and low and behold, it worked.
Now comes the part I don't understand is how the top goes down. It goes back like it should but when it is done, the "metal top" doesn't seem right. In the owners manual it says that you can take that part off and put it in the trunk. Does that have to be done all the time? I don't have the cover that is shown in the owners manual but I kinda thought that the "metal part" would cover all of it and lay flat?? sorry such a long read. Any help would be appreciated. This is my first vert and I havn't seen another so Im not sure how it should look. Thanks in andvance

 

Nope. That's right. And about taking the targa off and putting it in the trunk... I'm not sure if it'll actually fit or not, but I've never tried. I just leave it like that. There's also a vinyl boot that goes over the top, which is what the studs around the outside are for. Most of them by now have rotted away in the sun, and they're rare and expensive to come by today in good shape. I think it looks just fine with the top laid back and no boot anyways. Too big of a pain to get out and put a boot on every time anyways

 

So can I take the targa off and put the top back up without it (and drive)?

 

Yes. The targa does fit, too. It's pretty convenient, actually. The straps on the package tray in the trunk are fairly secure.

 

Here are some tips to enjoying your vert.

You can remove the hard panel and it does fit in the trunk. In my experience, driving with the panel removed and the rest of the top up is not much fun. It looks kinda cool if you are into the Magnum PI scene. I get wind buffeting and pressure booming in my 90 vert when the panel is removed. I did it once just to say I did it. Then I was done.

Driving with the top down is a great experience in the 7. Put that wind-blocker panel up and drive! If you are out on the highway 55mph and above, I usually raise both windows up to just above my ear level. This keeps the wind out of my ears and the sound in the car.

I leave my top down much of the time-I just park the car in my garage.

I used to use my boot cover all the time, but laziness has caused me to leave it in the garage.

Yes. You can take the targa off and drive with the soft part up. Like Jackhild said, it's not a pleasant drive, though. It's like a very low frequency wind pounding in the car, causing a weird pressure pulsation all throughout. Very annoying, but yes, you can do it.

And I just tried putting the top in my trunk, and it does fit

After you drive around with the top down, you really won't want to put it back up. I've never even taken my targa top off either, but nice to know it will fit in the trunk if I ever do. I have a boot cover and it looks great, but it is a pain in the *** to take on and off. Most of the time I just go bootless.

 

To clarify, mine could fit, but it doesn't currently fit.

The Amplifier/SAS Bazooka/jumper-cables/coolant jugs/premix oil/backup fanbelts/2gallons 15W40 Mobil Delvac/backup coolant hoses/hydraulic jack/roll of paper towels/Snap-On tool box/spare fuses/used but good pressure plate/S4 JDM transmission (35-40,000 miles)/spare gauge pod/ semi-burned out Taurus Fan/DOT3 Brake Fluid/case of Fix-A-Flat/blowupSexDoll(real hair)/Oil funnel/ assorted gumwrappers/Roll of red Duck Tape get in the way.

No wait that's my other RX7, it came loaded that way when I towed it home...

I was just about to ask how you got an transmission to fit in your convertible's trunk.
