VDO gauges good?

I'm really considering getting some VDO gauges becuase they are pretty cheap. I heard somewhere that they were good. Is this true? Are they any better than autometer? Do you guys recommend them?

With the old off road race car they were just about bulletproof. the only gauge we would break regularly was the tach. We fixed it by just removing it alltogether.

How about for the coolant temp and oil temp gauges. Electrical or mechanical? I really like the mechanical 270 degree sweep, but unsure how much harder they are to install. Is it easy enough to run tubbing or should I just go with the electical?

I use the electrical ones. You would have to run oil lines and coolant lines into the cabin. Messy Messy Messy if one breaks.
