You might be able to fit 245/40 on the rear. I can fit 245/50/16 just fine. Look for Camaro tires...

I'd go with wider front tires at least. 215 seems narrow for a 7.5" wheel. I have 215s on 17x7 wheels. (However keep in mind the extra rubber will add some weight and probably won't do much good unless you need the extra traction.)

Are you really worried about weight when you're running 17s?

i know the OP mentioned that he plans on modding the engine a bit to get to around 300whp..well i can tell you that im making 400whp now and going from a 245 in the rear to a 275 made absolutely no difference when your talking average compound street tires..it still gets no traction what so ever...so its not necessary to go any wider then 245...as for rim choices i would go with 17 inch enkei RPF1 or EKM3 they are both awesome wheels that look really good on an FC and they are fairly cheap as well

I would not go with a 235/40 rear and a 215/40 front.

I would do 225/40 or 225/45 front, and step the rears down 235/35 if running 225/40 front or 235/40 if running 225/45 front.

They came on my car. I'd replace them with lighter wheels if could afford it and thought it was really necessary. If I can save a pound or two per wheel by running 215 vs 225 tires, I think it's worth it since I have an n/a which doesn't really need the extra traction. If I start doing a lot of track driving I may pick up some vert wheels.

There are 17" wheels that are relatively lightweight (under 20lb; these are 14.1), which are fine for a mostly street driven car. For a track only car, sure you'd want the lightest you can get without sacrificing strength. I don't think you'd want to go below 15", but I don't know why exactly. I assume the tire sidewall has something to do with it.

I've got myself all obsessed with wheels now. time to do more research.

...this is totally off topic, but I wish there was a non-animated "dunno" smiley.

you should look into some 98 svt mustang wheels they are cheap and look great on a fc i would also run a small spacer on the back wheels to give it that mean stance.
