I said the same but i also havent seen or talked to my dad in a few years so we are talking again and he wants to make it up to me i guess. I am 17 by the way and already have a really good job and prefer to pay for my own **** but he wont take no for an answer. If i was the typical "kid" i would use him to get some $800 a piece BBS rims or something similar

I graduated this year and bought myself some new 17's They're R1 GTR 5R's, like Volk GT-C knock offs, and I got them for $320 without tires. They're 7" wide all around because I don't get crazy with the car, and I'm looking to buy 225/45/17 tires, so that would be my .02 for the fronts. That, or 215/45's...

And just to ramble, I'd get 8.5/ 9" rears, because it would look nice Throw some 245/40's or something on them and you shouldn't have any problems, turbo or not.

And that's a coincidence- I just turned 18 and started talking to my real dad, too. Wish he'd buy me a paintjob

:

225/45 on a 7" wide wheel is fine in the front, I ran that size for years with a tired old stock suspension, tons of room in the rear but watch your tire height if your going wider

you can get 17x9 +17 work emotion CR Kai's all day long for $1400 shipped

or you could look into 17" rotas at wheeldude.com for $700-$850 shipped since you don't want to spend all your dad's money.

i don't know the situation, but its pretty cool that you and your dad are talking again or whatever, and its cool that he wants to get you some wheels.

You mentioned that size up front on the stock suspension- would it still be fine with a 1" drop from my RB springs/KYB GR-2 combo? Like would there be enough space with the drop if it was on your car? Sorry to thread jack, just curious.

btw I put smaller sidewall tires on my fc (a tad too small but most do whatever size I had) and my speedo was quite a few mph off...

Yes, the speedo can be recalibrated (it's mechanical), but it's probably not necessary as long as you don't go with super wide tires in the rear.

The gauge's accuracy is simply a matter of keeping the tire circumference similar.
If you look at the "specs tab" on your tire at Tire Rack, they give you a "revolutions per mile" number...compare this to your old tire and see how different it is.
In my case, the difference between the stock 205/55/16 tires and the new size I chose- 235/45/17- was about 10 RPM's...an insignificant amount.

The typical OEM speedometer is relatively accurate at around 60 MPH...above and below this area, it's not too close anyway.
Given the width of the needle and the fatness of the gauge face markings- both of which contribute to making certainty difficult- I can say that at an indicated 60MPH, my gauge reads exactly the same as a new 2009 RX-8 that I was following.
The odometer also agreed over a measured 10 mile distance on the interstate.
(We were calibrating an Autometer gauge installed in another project car and had to spend some time measuring/marking distances anyway, so I took the opportunity to compare my readings with the new RX...).

I had those tires on my car for like 5-6 years with stock suspension.

Last summer I swapped my suspension: RB springs, KYB AGXs- so the answer is you will be fine with it.

This winter I went to 18" BBS.

here's a cool tire-size calculator, including speedometer differences: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

A 215/45/17 tire is only .3% off. I was going to go with 225/45, but I don't really need the extra traction, and I certainly don't need the extra weight so I'll probably stick with 215.

Since tires are proportioned as a ratio between tread width and sidewall height, the wider the tire, the taller the sidewall (for any given sidewall ratio).

sort of off topic (sorry), but thought this was interesting. I was looking at tires, and according this page on the tirerack.com, at least for this tire, the 225/45/17 weighs 2 pounds more per tire than the 215/45/17. I haven't looked at any other tires to compare, but I think that's significant. If you have a high-power car, then the extra grip will be beneficial but for my n/a, the extra 2 lbs. per wheel (and on the outer edges no less) is not worth it.

Whatever...as long as everyone realizes that a larger diameter than stock tire will change the speedo. You can run wider than stock tires like 245 and still have the same diameter.

this is like the most bizarre thread, people saying 16s are better and worrying about speedometers, I thought maybe I had been linked into a girl scout's forum by accident, lol

Rolling Radius is the correct term.

Edit- Personally i always thought the Falken Hanabi wheels would look sick on an RX7.

I have some 18" rims and tires I'm trying to sell... for $600 you could get 4 rims and tires already balanced and ready to run.

Don't mean to thread jack but I have a quick question. I have Speedline 17x17.5 I am pretty sure all around on my care (came with it), and I currently have 235/40 on the rear and 215/40 on the front. Should I keep this when I get tires? Or would (I don't know why I ask because I know everyone will have a different opinion) people with tire experience recommend something else?
