Unplug....

ok my car is having a real big jerking hesistation problem. everyone is saying that its the TPS. i cant adjust it till this weekend when i have off of work. what would happen if i unplug it, would the hesistation stop????? and would that be a way to see if it is the TPS indeed that is causing it, if i unplug it????

No, unplugging it isn't going to help anything. If you unplug it and nothing changes, then odds are your TPS is out of adjustment or in need of replacement.

Adjusting the TPS takes fifteen min. max. when you get home from work (right when you pull in the driveway, don't let the motor cool down) whip out your meter and your little screwdriver and BANG! Do it today and you can have a new (or used) one installed before the weekend if you play your cards right.

i'm a little lost on what symbol to set the meter on.... but heres how i know how to do it so far i think. while the car is on stick the meter in the plug and check to see if its on 1ohm and while hitting the gas it should be higher then 4 to 6.

looking for Ohms
Car is OFF with the ignition on.
Unplug the TPS and
Should be 1KOhm at rest, rising smoothly to 5 +/- 1 KOhm at WOT.
Procedure is on page 4-35 of the 1986 FSM.

Ok, thats 5 + or - 1. OR between 4&6 but preferably 5...
Testing the plug that comes out of the TPS.
There's a FSM at fc3s.org in the how-to's dropdown

You unplug the sensor, and stick the probes in the back of the plug. Adjust the small screw until you have a reading of 1 ohm. Now move the throttle slowly from its rested position, to wide open throttle. The numbers should change slowly from 1 to 5. Anything between 4 ann 6 is acceptable. It should not shoot to 0 or any other odd number when moving the throttle. That is called a "blow open" and would require a new TPS. Hope this helped.

Here's the page out of the 87 manual. The plug for the tps is disconnected, and you are looking towards the tps and putting your meter on the blades. The A to B reading is what you are looking for. 1K ohms with the throttle at rest. Open the throttle full open and the reading should change to approx 5K ohms.. Now there is a little problem with the manual on the reading from A to C. The part where it says idle position approx 5 ohms is correct, BUT the reading from A to C with a full open throttle is INCORRECT. It says approx 5 ohms, but this is not right and is aknowledged as a MISTAKE. If you go full open, A to C will read something like .57. Notice where the decimal point is on the .57. Just do the A to B and get 1k ohm at the rest position and approx 5k ohms when full open throttle and all will be well. And yes put your meter on the horseshoe scale which is the ohms symbol when taking a reading. One last thing. MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS FULLY HOT! NOT TEPID WARM. HOT, AS IN RUNNING TEMP. If you do not do that, there is an item called a thermo wax and its fast idle cam that will make everything you do with a cold engine INVALID. The fast idle cam and thermowax, when cold WILL hold the tps plunger away from its normal warmed up position giving false readings. Get the car HOT when setting the tps.
