Understanding the "rear end"

I am a little confused when it comes to the rear end. Does a rear en include the differential? Are there CV axles on the rear end? Is the rear end the same as a rear axle? Are those just different slang terms? When someone says there selling the "rear axle" is that just the differential?

The FC has independent rear suspension. On old cars, trucks, and Mustangs, a solid rear axle is used. In general, when someone refers to a "rear end", it means the differential. Sometimes, it means the whole rear solid axle. Saying rear end on a car with independent rear suspension, it means just the differential.

IRS cars have a differential mounted to the body, and 2 cv axles coming out of the differential unit going to the rear hubs.

Well when you're talking about an FC, they all have drive shafts, rear differentials, and CV shafts (aka half shafts or CV axle). If you're talking about the first gen I believe those have solid rear axles (no half shafts). My Ranger, for example, has a solid rear axle.

Now when someone says 'rear end' in reference to the drive train... it may just be best to ask for clarification. It could include subframe parts, too.

yeah thats a good price, around here ive seen people ask for $200. I got mine for $80 from a friend =) ... make sure you get the driveshaft and axles if your are swapping from a non turbo.

My car is a turbo swap and it still had non turbo diff and axles, so i swapped it and I just say it has a TII rear end now

That's a pretty good deal. I think I paid something like $120 for mine.
