Thread for Tii manual transmission reverse light switch

When we bought our Tii from TigerJapanese the reverse switch was broken off. I dont remember exactly how but we managed to rig up an alternative with putty epoxy that has worked fine for several years now.

However, now it is leaking and $170 for Mazda's pathetically dim reverse lights seems silly. So I wanted to get it inspected (I'm guessing TX safety inspection will look for them) but then I wanted to pull the switch and just plug it until next year's inspection time.

Anyone know what the thread is for the Tii manual transmission reverse switch is?

thanks,

Jim

I was able to cut away a little bit of the crimping that held the two external parts of the sensor together so I could separate them & clean the contact, then bent the remaining bits of the crimping back to hold it together, and a hose clamp to make sure its secure. Its held & worked fine for about 4 years now, but if you don't have the original anymore then you can't really do that.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are trying to do with the reverse switch. I have a JDM engine and transmission. My car is still no jackstands so I can't confirm, but here's what you do for working reverse lights.

Where the switch mounts on the transmission you'll see two prongs. Take female bullet connectors, one for each prong. Wire those to your engine harness.

The exposed part of the reverse switch was broken off by TigerJapanese or their agents so the terminals were gone along with the back of the switch. Everything silver including the wires was gone...

So I got another switch from Frys and used epoxy putty to bind it to the core of the OEM switch. However, now it is leaking.

The reverse lights aren't bright enough to help you see while reversing and do little more than signal other drivers that you're backing out. But I'd guess TX state inspection check for them. So I want to get a bolt that I can screw into the port the reverse switch screws into to prevent fluid from leaking out.

If you fix the leak by removing the Reverse switch then aren't you rendering it useless. The reverse lights needs the signal from the switch to operate and there isn't any wiring possibilties to make up for the switch being removed unless you wired in a switch that you could manually throw when putting the car into reverse to fool someone at the rear of the car into thinking they actually worked properly. If the inspection crew has one person in the car and another at the rear then this would not work.

Yes, Satch. We'd run the car without reverse lights all year and then put the leaky switch back in next year for inspection.

While probably illegal compared to the idiot in a Camry thru a school zone while texting and drinking their venti skinny sugar-free hazelnut latte while slapping their kid in the back seat it doesnt seem so bad!

I think you might be wrong about the TX inspection requiring them.

Could be. But since only a few counties in TX require smog that means the bulk of the inspection is "safety" (not revenue, no really it cant be an excuse to gen revenue) it seems like something they'd chk.
