Underhood lining

Why exactly is that underhood lining/insulation there? Is it supposed to insulate the hood paint from engine bay heat or something? Mine is getting extremely ragged, I am just trying to find out if there is a good reason to leave it in there or if I can just rip it out.

it DOES protect from heat to some extent... however, i agree with 86gxl that its MOSTLY for noise.. Summit sells some aluminum foil type stuff that you can replace it with thats mainly a heat shield and looks pretty cool too!

My strut bar rubbs on mine... thinking about rippin it off as well!!

None of my other cars have had underhood insulation, so unless I get a definate "do not do that!" by this evening, it's probably getting pulled. It's letting chunks of fabric dangle in the engine bay, it looks hideious, and I don't mind a little more noise.

i've had it like this for over a year, and like i said, i wasn't even the one to remove it. the paint on my hood that has cracked isn't even over the engine, and its not that bad of crackage either. prolly the texas heat beaming on the car everyday. (its winter and i think it hit 75F yesterday. t shirt weather all day and all night.)

What, the hood insulation? Jeeze, probably about 1/2 pound. I'm not pulling it to save weight, I just want that mess out of the way.
