UnClogging the Clog

I have an 88 GXL.

How would i go about clearing the gunk out of my CATs? I much rather not pull the catalic converter and precats out but i would like to find a way to clean them.
Do i have clogged Cats? i don't know. powerband seems fine to what im used to. i get my powerband all the way till i hit 5500rpm then after that power jumps higher for another 1.2k so i get most of my power till 6.5 . it's been about 3 monthes since i removed my Airpump and my 5/6 ports stoped working sometime in between. (i wired my 5/6 ports open). i figure that i can

would it be a good idea to just spray carb cleaner down the ACV while the car is on? i figure that i can spray away and see the chunks of crap come out of my cats and at the same time clear up some dirt that may be clogging my actuation of my 5/6ports.

would this be a good idea or is there another way?

If she's still got the power she's always had (as far as your concerned), especially under load, don't worry about the cats just yet...

In my ride before i pulled the air pump. all i heard was popping. POP POP POP from running having my tps not adjusted. after i adjust my tps and replaced my fuel filter. popping was reduced in the low rpm range I.E. 1k-1.5k under load. after i removed my airpump POping just stoped completely. for about a 2 monthes in. i think my 5/6 ports got shut closed around this time as well. popping from my cats have come back.

so i figure My car was running pig rich before and with the pump gone it'll be even worse.
all i asked is how would i go about to clean my cats without removing it. or shooting down carb cleaner down my engine vacuum.

The air pump removal is not going to affect your A/F ratio, except maybe on decel, when the anti-afterburn valve (on the ACV) injects a little air into the intake. Without the air pump, if your ACV "intake" line is not blocked off, you'll be sucking ambient unfiltered air into the AAV during decel...All of the other ACV functions inject air post-exhaust (which do tend to create backfires on an open exhaust).

That's pretty strange, having backfiring without the air pump supplying air... How well is the TPS adjusted?

i just calabrated the TPS to from the ecu. 1 volt. first i adjusted for 1k ohm on a multimeter first. then i measued readjusted it to my ecu to 1 volt. as for the ACV i blocked off the intake line and that's sealed. i can remove the rubber intake line and the seal will be open for me to do what ever i like.

i actually think that if i can get to the acv and have my brother pull the rev to 2k-2.5k i can create enough vacuum for it to pull air from the ACV and not pull air to the active AAV. AAV is only active on.

im going to go ahead and spray a whole can of carb cleaner to attempt to spray carb cleaner air into my cats so any gunk or carbon that's in their will be open for a more free flow.

And this 1 volt was while she was idling at 750, right?

The actual FSM test for the AAV has you pulling that "intake" hose from the air pump, then revving her up and going into a quick decel, and feel for a couple of seconds of suction (vac) at the end of the hose (air getting drawn in to the ACV). I don't think this is your problem, though, unless you have a leak somewhere...

Reiterate- if she has power under load, your cats aren't clogged

nope it was durring the oN position. and not idleing. but the car idles's nicely and solid at 750 rpm. +i feel i got at An improved amount of gas millage. and i know it's right because it hits it's 3k mark durring inital startup for it's 17 sec warm up. before hit just hit 1.5k and bounce to 2.2k for 17secs.

As for power. i THINK i have power. but you got to remember i've been running without an airpump for the past 5000 miles in the past 3 monthes. i honestly wouldn't know the difference if it were clogged or not. i don't know why my cat is popping with no air pump but it is. i don't remember the power i once had.

only other rx7 i've driven in was my brothers s5 auto rx7 about 5 years ago (Before it got stolen). and a buddy Massive streetport CUsTOM Exhuast safc2 worked convertable s4. so i really don't know what to compare it to. i got a home girl who's got an auto s4 witch is stock with low miles. and her car feels like it pulls hard. but her car is in excelent condition. mines is beat up for the past few years. i checked the compression on my car and it's at 110 front and 97 rear so im on the LOw grade of good.

only thing i can think about right now. is that i could clear out my cats of any dirt if their is any just for the hell of it. only cost me a $1.30 can of carb cleaner.
