jump the fuel pump

How exactly do you jumper the fuel pump? From reading in some posts, there's a yellow connector close to the air filter. But how do you jump it? Run a piece of wire to somewhere? Detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated! Or a link to some direction to detailed instructions would also work!

You only need to do it for a few seconds. You will hear the pump go on and shortly after you will hear the fuel moving in the engine bay.

Yup. If the fuel system has been drained (in the engine bay), you'll get a few seconds of loud air rushing, then a steady hiss of fuel. Once the sound becomes consistent, the system is primed. However, this is also a really good time to look/smell for leaks. The system is under pressure, but the engine is cold (or at least hasn't been running for a while). Fuel spraying into a cold engine isn't a big deal. Fuel spraying onto a running engine is a big deal.

How do you go about draining the fuel in the engine bay? I'm trying to get an 89 going that's been sitting for at least a year....drained the tank, but I'm not sure where the fuel lines are that run into the engine. Thanks for the help guys!

Eh, just disconnect the lines at some point. Most of it will drain out.

Alternately, you could refill the tank, and run the fuel pump for a bit (20-30 seconds should be plenty). The new gas will run through the lines & flush out the old gas. A little bit of old gas in the tank won't bother things.

Nobody mentioned that for this to work you have to have the key in the ON position. Just get a piece of wire or paperclip and bend it into a U shape and stick each end into each side of the connector.

... you mean not everyone carries a paper clip bent into a U-shape in their glove box? It's right next to my fuel door flap opening rod.

I carry a short piece of wire with male spade terminal crimped onto either end, so it plugs straight into the check connector. Works for the S4 initial set coupler too.
