U joints?

I am hearing clicking sounds that are very loud when in reverse. gets faster as the car speeds up. It has been doing this for about a month now. when in drive the sound goes away. Well you can slightly hear it but at faster speeds nothing to my knowledge. but when in reverse it freaking loud. I can hear it over my exhayst. I was advise from a Autozone manager he bets its the U joints.

Anyone have any input on this?

Can I purchase U joints and just replace them? IF so, how difficult is that process?

If I have to get the drive shaft, can I get on from the junkyard from any 2nd gen as longs its an automatic as well? and if so will they include the U joints?

How dangerous is it for me to drive it like this? Just dont want my car to die on me.

Thanks for anyones input!

to answer one of your questions, the U-joints in the FC are, unfortunately, not replaceable.

Well the u joints are not replacable on the drive shaft. I suggest to get a shop get make you one with replacable u joints. Will cost less too and be better with replacable ones. also its not really dangerous for you but it is for your car. This happend to me about 6 months ago the u joint broke when i was doing 75 mph on the highway. It cracked part of my transmission and was costly. I suggest getting it fixed asap.

Well I will pay the junk yards a visit this weeknd and see if they have any. What am I looking for to insure the U joints are in good shape in the the one I purchase?

Also I am guessing the 5 Sp drive shaft is different correct? Just in case i cant find a auto tranny.

Is everyone agreeing its the U joint?

Well to be definate i would take out the old shaft b/f you make a choice. And check the play of the u joint. and if u get a junkyard one i would save up like 150 so u can get a aftermarket one b/c a junkyard one will eventualy have the same problem.

Its my daily drive so I dont have the privaledge of just taking the old one out first. Another question I have is , When I get a new one or even a used one how will I be able to put it in right. is ther only one way ? I was reading and it sai to mark spot before removing. So How will I know where to put the new one or used one?

I think you only have to mark it if your putting the same one back in. I'm on my third junkyard shaft and I haven't marked one yet since the one I'm putting back in is from a different car. Haven't had any problems.

actually a company makes a replacement driveshaft using 7260 ujoints (very very common dodge style ujoints) its something i would seriously consider, since if one goes bad, you just go down to the store and pick up a dodge ujoint. i can post more info if you guys want it.

Yes..a company called Rockford u-joints makes a replacement for the Rx-7 that uses retaining clips that go on the inside of the yoke which makes an easy installation. I have made my own TII tranny to a N/A rear end driveshaft by using these u-joints. I just put the auto tranny slip yoke onto the N/A driveshaft and put many hard miles on the car without a problem. I myself bought them from arizonadrivelines.com.
