s4 GTU. It's got the looks of a T2 and many of its features (brakes, suspension, T2 seats), but still got all the lightweight base model features like manual windows.
but keeping waiting for that T2 if you have major ambitions for power. Trust me, I've got both.
You can do 220-250rwhp on stock turbo, intercooler, and ECU.

86 Base.
If your budget is 2-4k, you could get an S5 NA... get something 89-91 in a GXL equiv... GTU's had crappy brakes in 90 for sure, 89 maybe.
Just don't settle and buy something that'll end up sucking you dry. Maybe something with a rebuild.
But, in the end, its up to you.. its your money. But if you screw up another GTUs or 10AE, <evil voice>I'll destroy you</evil voice>.

The only s5 you should even consider is the GTUs. Since you prolly won't find one, you should either get a Sport ('86, '87 or '87.5) or an '88 GTU. If you can't find that, I'd recommend going with a stripped down base for '86 or '87 and doing a 5-lug conversion.

i love my 87.5 base. totally awesome, slow, but totally awesome. you will love any rx7 you get....
remember, you can always make it faster later. i would look for something with a **** money interior. then worry about making it faster down the road.

The 86 Sport embodies what an FC should be.
- light weight (2625 compared to S5 TII's 2987)
- low drag coefficient (.29 as compared to .31)
- 5 lug wheels
- 4 piston front calipers.
S4 N/A's are also very easy to work on. Hell, if I can work on one, anybody can.
My 21 year old 86 stays under 1/4th on the gauge even during spirited driving so what cooling problems are you referring to?
Maybe with the crappy sport front (OPTIONAL) bumper, but the rubber aero kit is the sexy.

I was going to say something 87.5 and newer because of cooling system problems and such. For a first car, this might be a good idea to avoid as many problems as possible...

Whats the isnt the 88GTU only like 75lbs heavier than the sport, but has a stiffer suspension(correct me if im wrong) and the same brakes, but a better looking body and a sunroof. I know that the lack of the sunroof on the sport makes a noticeable difference, but nothing beats the roof open on a track day, unless you have a vert and the top down. Thank god I have the best of both worlds.
I have an 86 base, no cooling problems 70K on the clock, 5spd, 4 lugs FTW, and it runs like a champ... I even just dropped 800.00 into Racing beat exhaust and plan to do some intake swapage, cold air intake makeup, suspension, wheels and tires and have fun with it untill I get a T2 engine to swap in

The difference in Sport's isn't huge, but I do think they embody a sport's car the best. That's just my opinion though. Take it or leave it.
