turn signal problems

I finished swapping my S5 body harness into my 88. I was quite surprised that everything works except for the turn signals and the high beams. I thought this was a bad switch, but after getting another one there is still no difference. The hazards work, but nothing happens when I try to use the turn signals. Is this a bad CPU? Or is there a short in the wiring somewhere else? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks!

You might want to try a continuity tester It will help you troubleshoot.

Its pretty simple, just check that the lines that are supposed to be switched by any given switch has power by plugging a lightbulb into it. If the lightbulb goes on, it has power. You can also check it by just crossing the correct pair of wires and seeing if the signal goes off.

However, I personally would reccomend looking at the 'clicker'. I dont know what it's actually called, but it is responsable for both the turn signals and the hazard lights blinking. Sorry I dont know the name or location, I'm sure somone will chime in

The wiring for the 89-91 turn signal switch is different than the S4.

You would need to re-wire if you are using a S4 switch

I got an S5 switch and it still did the same thing. That was my first thought on the problem too.

Which harness do you mean exactly? I rewired the whole car with S5 stuff.

Okay, there is a switch to main/dash harness harness. It is about 15 inches long and goes from the light switch and turn switch to the main harness.

did you change the light switch harness???

I don't know how much more basic I can say it. If you swapped all the harnesses in the car you should be aware of this harness

It sounds like either you are using a S5 light switch harness with a S4 light switch. Or you are using a S4 light switch and light harness into a S5 main harness and didn't re-pin it, or you are using a S5 switch with a S4 light harness.

Pick one that you didn't swap... light switch harness, turn signal switch... etc.

Dude, you started out pretty courageous. Don't bug out now now.

It sounds like you don't have an FSM (Factory Service Manual) which would show you all this continuity check stuff in diagrams that at first you will hate and resist, but which you must learn to LOVE if you expect your ride to run right after all your effort.

Get a Multimeter with probes and a currrent clamp.

You are half way to the Big Time. No backing out now.

Good luck.

I had changed the light switch harness to S5 along with everything else, and with the S5 signal switch I still have the same problem. I downloaded the FSM stuff and I'll get back after I check everything. Thanks for the input.

So you have a S5 gauge surround as well?

The S5 turn signal switch won't mount to a S4 gauge surround.

I know this thread is old but i am having the EXACT same problems with my s4. I have the S5 gauge surround and everything works except the hight beams and turn signals. I belive that i have a short as it keeps blowing the fuse badly every time i attempt to use the turn signals

Also, there is a relay at the very front of the car, that is clicking on and off very quickly.. Any ideas?

the car is stock, other than that someone tried to steal it and pulled the wiring around pretty good, broke the orig s4 gauge surround that therefor i am using the s5 stuff....

any help would be appreciated

thanks

again  the S5 turn signal switch will not work in a S4 car unless you re-pin the harness.

omg, my thread is back...and yes, you need a s4 switch. Even though the S5 plugs fit, it won't work at all.

Well that is not true... you just need to re-pin the S4 turn signal plug. Every single wire needs to be placed in a different spot to make the S5 light switch work in a S4 car.
