Turn signal problems

I have a never ending issue on my TII that perhaps eventually I will resolve.

Ever since the car has been back on the road (for the last year) the right turn signal fast blinks as if the car is telling you one of the bulbs is out. Both bulbs do work. Here are the things that I have done so far:
  • Inspected all bulb connections, everything appears in order
  • Replaced several terminals in the harness at the right rear taillight assembly. Terminals had a decent amount of corrosion that could have a resistance effect. In fact this was an issue causing brake lights on the left side not to work before I put the car back on the road
  • Replaced the body ground near the right rear taillight with a new brass ring terminal
  • Replaced the flasher unit inside the CPU as part of a larger refurbishment of the entire CPU to get back other functions (door keyhole light, ignition column light, and other warning beeps)
  • Replaced the right front turn signal housing as the ground wire looked like it was holding on by a strand
  • Inspected other chassis grounds near the trailing coil and below the stock airbox. These appeared fine
I'm about out of ideas. I think the only ground I have yet to inspect is the one behind the gauge cluster which I'm saving for last as I don't wish to play brittle plastic roulette until it is nearly my last option (which, depending on feedback received here, it may be).

So, has anyone else had a rogue turn signal refuse to cooperate? Did something other than what I've addressed finally fix the problem?

Recheck all your bulbs. Make sure that the rear bulbs are 1156 (single contact) and the front bulbs are 1157 (double contact). If you accidentally mixed up the bulbs, than that could cause your problem. Make sure that the rear bulbs are put in correctly. The bulb base has two small staggered pins to ensure that they get installed in the correct position. That might be true for a metal socket, but for a plastic socket they can be installed incorrectly especially when one doesn't have a clear view of the full socket. Ask me how I know that? Also, others had a similar problem when they replaced their front turn signal bulbs with long life Sylvania bulbs. Had something to do with the resistance of the bulb.

Edit: Actually, I was thinking about the rear stop light bulb (1157) when I remarked about being installed incorrectly. So, please disregard that part of my comment.

I think you're taking all the right steps to troubleshoot this. That "fast blink" function depends on the current draw for each left/right bulb circuit, as anyone who replaced standard bulbs with LED replacements would soon find out. Since you're NOT running LED bulbs, Hot_Dog may be on to something:

Long life bulbs generally draw less current in operation; is it possible you replaced one bulb on the offending side (front or rear signal)? That might cause enough of a current draw difference to set off the fast blink function.

Maybe you can try replacing all the front/rear turn signal bulbs with the same brand bulb? If that doesn't work, there is an easy mod you can do to the CPU/flasher unit to disable the fast blink feature without harming anything else - I did that mod on my FC when I switched to LED replacements for all the exterior bulbs (except headlights). The mod was posted by Dale Clark in the 3rd gen section, and down in post #68, I confirmed that the same mod works with the S5 CPU/flasher unit - CPU/flasher units are the same.

All bulbs are same side to side. Unfortunately, since it's about the only thing in parts stores these days, they are all Sylvania long life. I've ordered some non-long life bulbs to give that a shot.

If the bulbs don't work, I'm going straight to this and de-soldering R1 on the old flasher module. Swap that out with the new one in the car and save the new one for some other rainy day.

Final update:

New, non-long life bulbs did not fix the issue. I had to resort to de-soldering R1 on the flasher unit inside the CPU. All is well now. I still wonder if a shaky ground somewhere is my underlying issue, but I can address those later. It's nice to have a normal right turn signal now.
