turbo waste gate actuator truth plese

So after porting my stock turbo wastegate i would like to run a boost controler so i can get to 10 or maybe 12psi. The guy porting the turbo says get an upgraded actuator. The guy building my engine says i wont need an upgraded wastegate actuator. Who the hell is right?! please dont say both.

boost controller will do the job, it interrupts the vacuum source to the actuator.

Upgrading the actuator would be a reliable upgrade though but you may still desire a boost controller. If you saw my hybrid thread, i went ahead and upgraded the actuator. Have yet to run it yet though because I am rebuilding my motor. But you can get a universal ebay actuator with adjustable arm for about $40 or so. I seen some set to open at 10psi.

Contact BNR. They can recommend an actuator based on your setup.

Too bad, they're both right. However, one could be better than the other, and done properly both could be better than just the one. A properly sprung and adjustable wastegate will put your peak boost where you want it and seal off the wastegate properly to build boost quickly, but still I think most sprung wastegates will leak some boost before peak, BUT if you REALLY want to build boost quick and then keep it at X level you'll want an electronic boost controller. Doing both with get you the benefits of both.

Evil Aviator is right, too, though, the guys at BNR know their **** and can give you good recommendations. I might just get a stage 4 from them sometime.

a well tuned RPM adjustable electronic boost controller will do the same job of a upgraded wastegate actuator.

Another thing you should consider if you want to raise the boost is porting your wastegate, depending on the turbo rebuild that may or may not be a standard service.

This is the first thing i mentioned.

Evil Aviator: They said I dont need it.

Karack: Ya im considering the small HKS boost controler. I cant remember the name off the top my head.

wastegate actuator upgrades aren't generally needed unless the actuator door is being pushed open by exhaust manifold pressure.

I've never seen it happen on a stock rx7 turbo. The biggest downfall of the stock turbo is how restrictive the turbine housing and wheel are.

^ ya. thats why im thinking low numbers for boost on stock. ive seen guys on here say they ran 14psi on stock but i really dont think that will hold 14psi. BNR told me that they just drop after a while. IDK.

Well his won't be stock, the wastegate will be ported and he'll run higher boost. I've had problems with the wastegate leaking before, even now I'm pretty sure it does some, but my manual boost controller helps manage it a bit.

A wastegate actuator with a stiffer spring or additional preload is supposed to mitigate boost dropping off up top. The rest of the stock turbo doesn't flow enough to really take advantage of this though.
