Turbo Timer

It's time for me to add a turbo timer, but I'm trying to find out what is the easiest and best one to install? Also, how easy should it be?

Does it hook up with the ECU and handbrake? and will it hook up to the aftermarket ECU? Any soldering?

Thanks.

It hooks into the ignition wiring only, unless its a really fancy one. Most of them have harnesses that fit your car specifically (they are an extra option, usualy ~$20). There is also a wire that goes to your ebrake switch. Other than that, its pretty cut and dry.

Turbo Timers are wired in via Ignition Wiring Harness. Most Turbo Timers you can get a harness and its pretty much plug 'n play after that.

Yea they aren't wired into the ECU (except for the APEXi turbo timer which monitors air fuel ratio also). You just have the **** that goes to the ignition harness, ground, and the vacuum line to read boost. I would suggest getting a harness, for $20 it saves a lot of time and you don't have to worry about loose connections!

I bought my Apexi Turbo Timer from:
http://www.rx7trix.com/

Had the harness and everything I think for $100 out the door.

I saw another place had it when I was buying my gauges called Evasive Motor Sports:

http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/me...tegory_Code=TT

They also have the harness for the RX-7's...

Turbo timer was 83 dollars and harness another 14 dollars...

I have a HKS turbo timer in my 83 Mitsubishi Starion (Turbo is only Oil cooled) and it work just great as well.. its not like they have a big job to do though.

A friend of mine had the same HKS one in his Turbo II, so again any one will work with no troubles and the harness only makes life easier...

Then again some people say you don't need them since the turbo is water and oil cooled. Or you could sit and listen to music for a min or two while it cools down.

I personally use one so I can have it incase I need to leave quickly or i can let it do the counting while I enjoy the music.

No it's not. Water-cooled turbos do not need to be cooled down before shutdown like older air-cooled turbos do. Waste of money.

Ahh, these cars have water cooled pumps for the turbos? Than it is a waste of money, eh?

No, they just have engine coolant running through them, this stays in the turbo after the car is shutdown and soaks up a very good percentage of the CHRAs' thermal capacity.

Yes, they are a waste of money.

It's a waste of money unless...

1) You speed like crazy everywhere you drive, keeping the engine in boost up to the last second when you slam on the brakes in your parking spot and are in such a rush that you have to immediately shut off the engine and leave the car.

and/or

2) You just want a gizmo that looks cool.

FYI: Any off-boost time counts as "cool-down" time, so that includes driving around the parking on your way to a parking space, slowing down when you enter a residential area or other lower speed area, etc. Also, as NZConvertible stated, the turbo is water-cooled and needs hardly any cool-down time after extended boosting.

But you gotta admit its funny to see peoples faces when you take the keys out but the car is still running, people stop you and say your car is still running but then it shuts off and they think your car is fucked up !

No need to do it from a few miles dude, drving into a car park without boosting is well enough.

Even if you did boost it then shut it off the water should still absorb the heat before the oil got cooked.
Cooking the oil means MUCH higher temps than your coolant system would ever see I would say.

I have a greddy turbo timer in my FC, and in my dad's Z32. took about 30 minutes to install first time in the Z. about 20 minutes in the FC. the greddy unit also has a volt meter, and several counting and speed measuring functions. its almost worth it just for that.

I have a Blitz TT in my FC. It also has a built in digital boost gauge, which is kinda neat. It came with the car when I bought it though, like said above they are pretty much a waste of money, aside from the "cool" factor...
