Turbo II ok as a daily driver?

I was going to sell my integra for another car. The two I have decided on is goign to either be a '92 Talon TSi AWD (I owned an AWD DSM before the integra), or a '89-'91 Turbo II.

I owned my Talon for 3 years, was active on message lists, forums, etc. I helped a friend build his low 11 second one, so I know pretty much what to expect from a DSM, but I am clueless on a Turbo II.

I have always wanted an RX-7, and I know a lot of basics to rotaries, how they work, and the electrical issues associated with Turbo II's, but it doesn't really answer my question on how well they hold up to being a daily driver, that sees the drag strip regularly, and regularly gets worked a bit on the street.

What would be your recommendations on what I should do?

Not paticuarly seeing as rotary engines go thorough alot of oil and gas. You would have to check the oil everytime you stop for gas. If you want a daily driver get a Honda inight. TII is a performance car. /me waits for others opinions.

if it's in good condtion, and stock, it should be reliable. As you mod it though, it will become less and less reliable (but that happens on any car).
It really depends on what you want. If you want a drag car, go DSM, but the TII will own on a road course.

I've driven mine for roughly a week, and I'd say that alot depends on your driving habits...

do you drive normally, and are EASY on the gas, and do most of your driving on the hwy? then YES, fantastic driver.

do you drive all of the time in town, and are not exacltly light with the pedal? Expect to spend lots in gas. Reliability... I dunno. As long as the compression stays up (good motors can last 20 years, don't worry about it!) and you remove the emmissions garbage, there's basically nothing TO go wrong, so you don't have to worry. Stock, they're AMAZINGLY complex. Handling is FANTASTIC, as long as you don't have something broken that you don't know about.

Lets not lose touch with reality on these cars. The RX-7 is....well...i hate to say it.

Just a car.

It is fine to drive everyday. I am sure that was a big part of the design. You just take care of it like any other car and it will take care of you.

It is bad on gas. But not like some SUVs out there. Complexity? I am SURE there are cars out there that don't do things nearly as well as the 7 that makes it look like a horse drawn carriage. Rather not complex if you look at the newer cars of today.

It is fine to drive everyday. It will spice up your everyday life

Just make sure you take care of it. And be nice to her when it is cool. (Properly warming the car up does NOT mean the temp gauge in the middle.) This means the oil should be heated up. This normally takes up to five miles of driving.

Have fun

James

No you don't.. I don't check mine except when I'm about to fill up and it's never been even near the low mark. And I had gone about 3000 miles on an oil change or two.

Change the oil every 2000 miles to be safe, and just maintain the car like a car should be maintained, and you'll be fine.

It's a GREAT daily driver let me tell you.. it's a horrible feeling in the winter when I'm toolin' around in the Civic and can't race anyone cause it's SLOW.. but it's great now when people pull up on me with their mustangs with clear taillights (yeah I know..) and just spank 'em (unless it's a new cobra, that's the only one I can't take yet).

GREAT daily driver.

Well, mine was supposed to be a daily driver, but it's turned into a year long project car instead. I'm with everyone else, if you treat it right, it'll do just fine. If you abuse the **** out of it, well, it's going to abuse you back

I'm up there with Scott, I've been using my 91 TII as a daily for the last 1.75 yrs!

It's a car, it's meant to be driven, so I just help the universe along with the plan of things.

A TII will do fine as a daily car...be careful modding though as a full turbo back exhaust and an intake is all it takes to hit fuel cut and make our motor go boom!! NA's make wonderful daily drivers - they can make nice HP gains fairly easily and you still get that great FC chassis/suspension for a more reliable daily driver package. I'm not knocking the TII (why would I, I'm swapping one into my NA soon hehe) but they are not to be modified without some real knowledge. If you plan on this being your only car all year and you do get any snow in your area go for the DSM AWD turbo, they are perhaps the best comprimise of attainable all season HIGH performance and respond real well to all kinds of mods. A 12 sec DSM is an easy affair, but if you ever take it to a road course a tamely modded TII will rip it a new one
