Turbo disassembly

I am in the process of porting my S4 turbo's wastegate and I need to take the turbo apart so shavings do not fall into the turbines. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks a lot,

- Eliot

you might be able to run a shopvac behind where your workign so everything you are shaving off gets sucked back into the sweeper... just an idea.

Or even an air gun blown out the opposite end. Even still, this leaves minimal space to do an optimal job, as opposed to It off the car and free to be placed In all sorts of angles to allow a better range of motion etc.

Don't be lazy. Take It off.

I have taken the turbo off, it is sitting in my basement waiting to be ported. I am trying to figure out if I need to disassemble the turbo even further before I can port it.

Thanks,

- Eliot

You just aimed the compressed air through the turbines after you ported it?

I dunno....anyone else?

i took the exhaaust housing off. It's only 6 bolts. I can dissasemble the thing in 6 minutes. 13mm wrench is what you'll need.

Ha! Coincidently, I'll be porting my Wastegates this weekend! I'll be doing this with my Turbo off and with the Exhaust Housing off aswell.

How do you get the exhaust housing off? There are a few bolts that will not come out because various lines that run to the turbo are blocking them from unscrewing.

On a s5 Turbo, I'm seeing that you'll need a thin 13mm(?) wrench to get past those snags. The lines could remain Intact during the Exhuast Housing removal.

its easy to take the coolant and oil lines off and makes it easier. there's 2 bolts that cant be unscrewed all the way because they run into where the lines bolt into, it that was what you were talking about. Just unscrew them as far as you can, then wack it with a hammer until you can unscrew it farther. Repeat if necessary. DO NOT try to force it apart by unscrewing the bolts against the center or you'll break them.

Yeah, that is what I was referring to. I have run into a few problems during this "project." Mainly old rusty bolts that will not come lose, or that just straight deteriorate when torque is applied to them.

The heads on three of the six bolts broke off due to deterioration and rust. I figured that will be fine, since I will just go buy some new bolts when it comes time to reassembling everything. One of the three broken bolts fell into the exhaust housing. Fine with me, since I figure I will get it when I get the exhaust housing off.

However, the other two broken bolts are still intact in their respective holes, and still act in holding the exhaust housing together. When I hit it with a hammer, nothing will move because there are still two studs holding everything together.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I could get these studs out?

Thanks a lot,

- Eliot

The metal plates that hold the turbine housing to the center arent threaded, so the broken bolts aren't doing anything. You just need to be REALLY persuasive with the hammer. As long as you don't hit it on any edges you'll be fine.

Bringing this back. How do you take the compressor housings off? Are they pressed in or bolted or something?

I took out the intake housing bolts and the only thing that moved was the entire intake side.(inner bolts)
The outer bolt(on the edges of compressor) didn't do anything when I took them out.
Shoudl I persuade it with a rubber mallet or something?

Also need info on the exhaust side too.

Please help,thx
