How much smoke, how long does it last and what does it smell like? May or may not be the turbo. If the car smokes a little bit and lasts a minute or less after start-up, that is not a concern. If it continues to smoke after that, first determine the source. Could be oil control rings, coolant seals/seal channels, or the turbo oil seals.

BTW, there are several companies that refurbish turbos including BNR, but first confirm the source of the smoke.

If it's smoke. If you start the car and it smokes then clears up after warmed up, it's the oil control rings, if it smokes and stays smoking it could be coolant seals and or oil control rings.

If you fire up the car and it doesn't smoke but after warms up, it's the turbo.

my dad says he can't really notice it untill the car is off. it is not alot smells like burning oil and looks like it is coming from the turbo or exhaust manifold. almost like it is burning stuff off.

My turbo smokes a little after I turn the car off too. Anyone know why? I was thinking one of the oil lines was loose or leaking.

If the smoke is not from the tail pipe, and it only shows up at the manifold after shutting the engine down, it is likely an oil leak, possibly in the oil pipe to the turbo. Look closely at the oil pipe to determine if the leak is at the gasket where the pipe attaches to the turbo or at the pressure fitting at the other end of the pipe.

there is no line kit and the only gaskets you'll find are from the dealership or mazdatrix/atkins/other rebuild shops that have spares. if you're in a pinch you can cut a gasket out of those gasket sheets and put a tiny bit of silicone on both sides.

not in a pinch. my dad now says it seems more like an exhaust leak. is it worth it to put a oil press gauge on the feed line of the turbo?

not really, unless it has a massive oil leak then the turbo is seeing the same pressure as the port where the stock pressure gauge reads from, if you want an accurate measurement of oil pressure then the stock port is the easiest location to put a pressure gauge fitting.
