what do you think would have caused it to start running funny in the first place.
Well since both my cars are n/a's, a S4 and a S5, im not certain to say without knowing how a TII is supposed to run, though if you posted what the symptoms were someone else may be able to help you more than I.

I saw a japanese tourist do this to an eagle talon once. Funny as hell.

Here's the simple steps man

1)Get a friend who knows something about autos... Really. We were all noobs at one time and just reading it doesn't help nearly as much as experience.

2) Go buy the following things.

A good floor jack
4 jack stands.
several oil pans.
A new oil filter
5-6 quarts of 20w-50 (unless you are up north then use 10w-30)

3) Jack the car up and put it on the stands... if you don't know how, then get someone who does as this can actualy kill you so be careful.

4) Under the car is the oil pan. It's pretty easy to spot as it's the big blocky thing.
In it is a bolt, called a drain plug. Put a pan under it, and unbolt the drain plug. Wait. Replace pan as needed... Once it is done draining put the plug back in,

5) Remove the Oil filter... it is on top right and looks just like the one you bought. Put some of the oil you bought in and around the lip of the new filter and hand tighten it on.

6) Add 3 quarts of oil. Check the dipstick. Add another, check the dipstick, add about 1/2 a quart, check the dipstick... should be full.

And for the love of GOD get a friend with some mechanical ability to help you.

don't put any oil IN the filter, just on the seal.

and try not to accidentally drain the transmission. those are a bit more difficult to refill.

oh, there's two vacuum lines that attach to the filler neck, so maybe you sucked in some major amounts of oil. i don't know.

I think 88-t-II and Mazin should team up and work on their cars together. Here is what Mazin had to say on a different thread...

People always say, "2 is better than 1" right? So, does that saying
apply to dipshits? If so, this team could really get some fixin done!!!

I also have an 88 TII, and anyone will tell you that the car running poorly could be almost ANYTHING. Let us know as close as you can what exactly it is doing-will it not idle, is it running rough, etc. Could be just a vacuum line popped off. This has happened to me and the car runs rough and weak and won't idle at all. Look at all the little hoses under the hood and see if there is one that has obvioulsy popped off. It may or may not be that simple, but its a good place to start. Your car should hold 5 quarts, so I don't know where the other 7 went, but thats not good. I guess you get the point by now.
Read the manual to learn how to read the dipstick. That will tell you if the oil level is full or low.
Also remember that YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL OFTEN. The rotary is designed to use a little oil, and it will. Turbos use a little more than N/As I think. Check the oil level often and keep a quart of oil in your car so you can add it when it gets low, which it will.

Just curious, and please don't take offense, but...

Are you a female?

If this is so, I commend you for your courage in ebarking on this new hobby.

It would explain alot, since at the age when many boys become interested in goofing with cars, most girls are not interested. The culture does not encourage girls knowing about changing oil.

Oooh boy... Just know that they are going to tell you that everything is wrong with your car! And they will try their hardest to charge you an arm and a leg for everything, so be careful!
Bottom line is, unless you are well off financially, you will have to learn to maintain this car yourself. You could ideally keep taking it to mazda and they'll fix it, but that'll be expensive for sure.

Well....I wouldnt have towed it. For what the tow bill, what mazda is gonna charge you then bs you, you could have very well done teh oil change yourself 4 times. thats 5-6 quarts of oil and a new filter each time. Ijust bought a case of Mobil 1 and a mobil 1 oil filter today for my 89 GXL for about $30 and thats nearly the same as what walmart woulda charged me.
