Transmission swap

So I have a 87 Auto Fc I want to manual swap it but manual transmissions for this year are hard to find. Anybody have another manual laying around? And if not can I use a 06 Rx8 tranny
or any other suggestions?

Here is a thread on putting a Series 2 RX-8 transmission in an FC. Installing S2 RX8 6-Speed in an FC - RX7Club.com - Mazda RX7 Forum
06 would be a series 1 but I think it pretty much the same. Shifter has to be relocated, trans mounts fabbed up, speedometer solution due to no provisions for a sensor/ cable on the gearbox, custom driveshaft, etc.
Here's one for a S1. Rx8 trans in rx7 fc3s - RX7Club.com - Mazda RX7 Forum

Also any n/a transmission from '86 to '92 will work or a '87 to '91 TII can be made to work with a driveshaft like this DRIVESHAFT, 86-92 NON TURBO WITH TURBO TRANSMISSION | Mazdatrix and using a TII flywheel and clutch of the same year as your car. Really since you have an automatic you just need a aftermarket(lightweight) flywheel and use your auto counterweight with it. Just get the flywheel/ clutch setup for the transmission you get. n/a or TII. Also you'll need a driveshaft either way as the auto won't work on a n/a trans and is too short for a TII.

I have relevant information for this topic! I've put together a spreadsheet for topics just like this.

Transmission swap-05urdcb.jpg

using a S1 RX8 trans with your engine in the stock location, the shift **** will be 4" farther forward than the stock N/A trans. The driveshaft will be problematic as well. If you use your stock auto driveshaft (which does fit the rx8 trans splines) it will be about 1.125 short. You may be able to just pull it out that far, but maybe a better alternative would be to have a spacer made to take up the slack. The stock manual RX7 driveshaft will not fit the RX8 splines, so that's not an option. The turbo driveshaft, besides being about an inch too long, will not bolt up to your N/A diff.

long story short, unless you are cool with moving your motor back 3-4" to get the shifter in the right location and making a custom driveshaft, you're better off finding a used rx7 manual trans.

Also, in case you're wondering if the RX8 shifter will fit in the body opening....the answer is "not without modifications". This is 3" from the stock location, so bring it forward anotehr inch from here
